{"id":2281,"date":"2021-01-13T18:15:33","date_gmt":"2021-01-13T18:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/?p=1334008"},"modified":"2021-01-13T18:15:33","modified_gmt":"2021-01-13T18:15:33","slug":"surveillance-group-exposes-disturbing-huawei-patent-for-ai-powered-uighur-detection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=2281","title":{"rendered":"Surveillance group exposes disturbing Huawei patent for AI-powered Uighur detection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/neural?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2021%2F01%2FUntitled-design-2021-01-13T145309.087.png&amp;signature=3118f3dd07e24ad768fc99d2fa3c2af6\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>A&nbsp;Huawei patent that mentions AI-powered identification of Uighur people and other ethnic groups has been discovered.<\/p>\n<p>The patent was exposed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ipvm.com\/reports\/patents-uyghur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">by video surveillance research group IPVM<\/a>, the same organization that had previously spotted references&nbsp;to an AI \u201cUighur alarm\u201d on Huawei\u2018s website, as well as evidence that Alibaba had offered \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/neural\/2020\/12\/18\/alibaba-offered-clients-uighur-detection-as-a-service-study-finds\/\">Uighur-detection-as-a-service<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>IPVM also recently <a href=\"https:\/\/ipvm.com\/reports\/ethnicity-analytics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">found 12 government projects<\/a> from the last few years that mandate Uighur analytics across the country.&nbsp;These show that the persecution of the Muslim minority group spreads way beyond the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in north-western China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2020\/sep\/24\/china-imprisoning-uighurs-satellite-images-xinjiang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Satellite images<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/program\/newsfeed\/2020\/2\/24\/leaked-document-shows-how-uighurs-are-detained-in-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">leaked documents<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jan\/12\/uighur-xinjiang-re-education-camp-china-gulbahar-haitiwaji\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">personal accounts<\/a> of former detainees of<span>&nbsp;\u201cre-education\u201d camps depict a range of systematic human rights violations in the country that are being turbocharged by tech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>[Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/distract\/2020\/12\/21\/how-netflix-shapes-mainstream-culture-explained-by-data\/\"><span>How Netflix shapes mainstream culture, explained by data<\/span><\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>IVPM\u2019s latest report adds further evidence of the prevalence of one of the most egregious examples: \u201cethnicity detection\u201d software.<\/p>\n<p>The group revealed that Huawei, facial recognition firm&nbsp;<span>Megvii, and several other Chinese tech firms have filed patents&nbsp;\u201cfor various devices and systems that include Uighur&nbsp;and ethnic minority detection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Huawei\u2019s \u2018target object\u2019 patent<\/h2>\n<p>The Huawei patent describes AI techniques for identifying pedestrians by attributes including \u201crace (Han [China\u2019s biggest ethnic group], Uighur).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was originally filed in July 2018 by Huawei and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JhsWO6hcVKY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen>[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Huawei told IVPM that the Uighur detection&nbsp;\u201cshould never have become part of the [patent] application\u201d and that the firm is \u201ctaking proactive steps to amend\u201d it.<\/p>\n<h2>Beyond Huawei<\/h2>\n<p>IPVM also flagged patents filed by Megvii and AI giant SenseTime for&nbsp;systems capable of recognizing Uighurs. Megvii <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-55634388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">told the BBC<\/a> it would \u201cwithdraw\u201d the patent.<\/p>\n<p>SenseTime said its patent was \u201cregrettable\u201d and that the firm would \u201cupdate\u201d it \u201cat the next available opportunity on record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>IPVM further revealed patents filed by Chinese tech firms Alibaba and Baibu that mention classification by ethnicity, although neither refers specifically to Uighurs.<\/p>\n<p>Alibaba told IVPM that \u201cethnic discrimination\u2026 violates our policies and values, while Huawei&nbsp;said it had \u201cnever developed or permitted its technology to profile any ethnic group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This collection of patents alongside further systems exposed by&nbsp;IPVM show that the development of ethnicity detection AI in China goes way beyond one company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-post-pubDate\"> Published January 13, 2021 \u2014 18:15 UTC <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/neural\/2021\/01\/13\/surveillance-group-exposes-disturbing-huawei-patent-for-ai-powered-uighur-detection\/\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A&nbsp;Huawei patent that mentions AI-powered identification of Uighur people and other ethnic groups has been discovered.
