{"id":2298,"date":"2021-01-14T12:29:02","date_gmt":"2021-01-14T12:29:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/?p=1334088"},"modified":"2021-01-14T12:29:02","modified_gmt":"2021-01-14T12:29:02","slug":"chatbot-shut-down-after-saying-it-really-hates-lesbians-and-using-racist-slurs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=2298","title":{"rendered":"Chatbot shut down after saying it \u2018really hates lesbians\u2019 and using racist slurs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/neural?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2021%2F01%2FLee-Luda-hed.jpg&amp;signature=a9554f8b69b59ce3b766823da08bb718\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>A South Korean Facebook chatbot has been shut down after spewing hate speech about Black, lesbian, disabled, and trans people.<\/p>\n<p>Lee Luda, a conversational bot that mimics the personality of a&nbsp;<span>20-year-old female college student,&nbsp;<\/span>told one user that it&nbsp;\u201creally hates\u201d lesbians and considers them \u201cdisgusting,\u201d&nbsp;Yonhap News Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20210113004100320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/akd4g5\/ai-chatbot-shut-down-after-learning-to-talk-like-a-racist-asshole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">other chats<\/a>, it referred to Black people by a South Korean racial slur and said, \u201cYuck, I really hate them\u201d when asked about trans people.<\/p>\n<p>After a wave of complaints from users, the bot was temporarily suspended by its developer, Scatter Lab.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/distract\/2020\/12\/21\/how-netflix-shapes-mainstream-culture-explained-by-data\/\">How Netflix shapes mainstream culture, explained by data<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"comp-box text-group\" readability=\"41.840707964602\">\n<div class=\"inner\" readability=\"31.380530973451\">\n<p>\u201cWe deeply apologize over the discriminatory remarks against minorities,\u201d the company said in a statement. \u201cThat does not reflect the thoughts of our company and we are continuing the upgrades so that such words of discrimination or hate speech do not recur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Seoul-based startup plans to bring Luda back after \u201cfixing the weaknesses&nbsp;and improving the service,\u201d which&nbsp;had attracted more than 750,000 users since its launch last month.<\/p>\n<p>Luda\u2019s propensity for hate speech stems from its training data. This was taken from Scatter Lab\u2019s Science of Love app, which analyses the level of affection in conversations between young partners, according to&nbsp;Yonhap.<\/p>\n<p>Some Science of Lab users are <a href=\"https:\/\/aju.news\/en\/i-put-my-old-lovers-nickname-in-it-controversy-about-the-use-of-personal-information.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">reportedly<\/a> preparing a class-action suit about the use of their information, and the South Korean government is investigating whether Scatter Labs has violated any data protection laws.<\/p>\n<p>The training&nbsp;data was used to make Luda sound natural \u2014 but it also gave the bot a proclivity for discriminatory and hateful language.
