Following President Joe Biden\u2018s inauguration, the White House\u2018s  official website has promptly re-instated a Spanish version of its website<\/a>. \u00a1Por fin!<\/p>\n

As noted by Julio Ricardo Varela<\/a> of Latino Rebels<\/a> the Spanish page is directly accessible from the White House website\u2019s main menu, or at whitehouse.gov\/es<\/a>. There are new La Casa Blanca Twitter<\/a> and Facebook<\/a> accounts too.<\/p>\n

You might recall that upon the Trump administration taking over the website, the Spanish version was promptly removed<\/a>. At the time, then Press Secretary Sean Spicer blamed the removal on the fact the administration has \u201ca lot of work to do.\u201d He also noted that they would \u201ccontinue to build out the website\u201d and implied reinstating the Spanish page was \u201cjust going to take a little bit more time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Apparently, four years wasn\u2019t enough time.<\/p>\n

It may seem like a trivial distinction, but it highlights a fundamental rift between the outgoing and incoming administrations. Spanish is the second most common language in the United States \u2014 a country with no official language \u2014 spoken by an estimated 41 million people. Many of them use Spanish as their main language, and\/or have better command of Spanish than English.<\/p>\n

Both Bush and Obama had Spanish pages or sections, and the fact that Trump\u2019s government thought they weren\u2019t worth keeping emphasizes that administration\u2019s lackluster consideration of its minority groups. That the official website and social media accounts for the country\u2019s administration might consider reaching out to people who speak Spanish is but basic decency.
