The search giant calls the system&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/WICG\/floc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Federated Learning of Cohorts<\/a> (FLoC).<\/p>\n<p>FLoC (pronounced \u201cflock\u201d) allows&nbsp;businesses to send ads to groups of potential customers rather than specific individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The system uses machine learning algorithms to create clusters of people with similar browsing habits. All the data analyzed by the algorithms \u2014 including your web history \u2014 is kept private on the browser and not uploaded anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>Google says that this approach effectively hides individuals \u201cin the crowd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2021\/01\/21\/how-this-company-leveraged-ai-to-become-the-netflix-of-finland\/\">How this company leveraged AI to become the Netflix of Finland<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Big G first proposed using FLoC instead of individual identifiers last year.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the company released new data&nbsp;from simulations of the technique conducted by&nbsp;Google\u2019s ads team. The company <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/ads-commerce\/2021-01-privacy-sandbox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> that the results&nbsp;were&nbsp;almost as effective as cookie-based approaches:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"6\">\n<p>Our tests of FLoC to reach in-market and affinity Google Audiences show that advertisers can expect to see&nbsp;at least 95% of the conversions per dollar spent when compared to cookie-based advertising.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Google now&nbsp;plans to make FLoC available for public trials through a March update to Chrome.&nbsp;The company will also&nbsp;test the cohorts with advertisers&nbsp;in the second quarter of this year.<\/p>\n<p>The tech remains under development, but the tests suggest it could provide more privacy than those unpalatable cookies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-post-pubDate\"> Published January 26, 2021 \u2014 13:06 UTC <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/neural\/2021\/01\/26\/google-unveils-privacy-friendly-ai-cookie-killer\/\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Third-party cookies might have a tasty name, but they can be pretty poisonous when they\u2019re quietly tracking your online behavior.
