Unlike most of its predecessors, their system isn\u2019t designed to defeat humans. Instead, it\u2019s programmed to play <em>like<\/em> them.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2021\/01\/21\/how-this-company-leveraged-ai-to-become-the-netflix-of-finland\/\">How this company leveraged AI to become the Netflix of Finland<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The researchers believe Maia<span>&nbsp;<\/span>could make the game more fun to play. But it could also help us learn from the computer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo chess becomes a place where we can try understanding human skill through the lens of super-intelligent AI,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2021\/01\/chess-engine-sacrifices-mastery-mimic-human-play#:~:text=Since%20IBM's%20Deep%20Blue%20defeated,chess%20tournament%20in%2015%20years.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> study co-author Jon Kleinberg, a professor at Cornell University.<\/p>\n<p>Their system \u2014 called Maia \u2014 is a customized version of AlphaZero, a program developed by research lab DeepMind to master chess, Shogi, and Go.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of building Maia to win a game of chess, the model was trained on individual&nbsp;moves made by humans.
