They noted that people whose images are captured in Clearview\u2019s database could be misidentified or exposed to data breaches.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhat Clearview does is mass surveillance and it is illegal,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.priv.gc.ca\/en\/opc-news\/news-and-announcements\/2021\/nr-c_210203\/?=february-2-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Daniel Therrien, Canada\u2019s privacy commissioner. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt is completely unacceptable for millions of people who will never be implicated in any crime to find themselves continually in a police lineup.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>[Read:<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/shift\/2021\/02\/01\/how-much-does-it-cost-to-buy-electric-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How much does it cost to buy, own, and run an EV? It\u2019s not as much as you think<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The regulators \u201crecommended\u201d that Clearview stop offering its services to Canadian clients. They also want the company to stop collecting any more images of people in Canada \u2014 and delete all the ones it already has.<\/p>\n<p>However, the commissioners don\u2019t have the power to fine Clearview or force it to leave the country.<\/p>\n<p>Clearview had already <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/neural\/2020\/07\/07\/troubled-facial-recognition-startup-clearview-ai-pulls-out-of-canada-before-it-was-pushed\/\">pulled out of Canada<\/a> because of the investigation. The country was&nbsp;previously the firm\u2019s largest market outside of the US, with more than 30 law enforcement agencies using the software.<\/p>\n<p>Clearview CEO Hoan Ton-That told the New York Times that he planned to fight the new ruling in court:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"6\">\n<p>This is a simple issue of public information and who has access to it and why.
