{"id":2833,"date":"2021-02-04T18:00:30","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T18:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/?p=1337372"},"modified":"2021-02-04T18:00:30","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T18:00:30","slug":"how-gms-plans-to-go-fully-electric-stack-up-against-ford-tesla-and-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=2833","title":{"rendered":"How GM\u2019s plans to go fully electric stack up against Ford, Tesla, and others"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><i><span>This <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanfleetreport.com\/news-general-motors-commits-to-all-evs-in-2035\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> was originally published by&nbsp;<span>Michael Coates<\/span> on<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanfleetreport.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> <i><span>Clean Fleet Report<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span>, a publication that gives its readers the information they need to move to cars and trucks with best fuel economy, including electric cars, fuel cells, plug-in hybrids, hybrids and advanced diesel and gasoline engines. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>General Motors announced a suite of environmental commitments Thursday, including a pledge to eliminate tailpipe emissions from its light-duty vehicles by 2035, be carbon-neutral in all global products and operations by 2050, and sign the Business Ambition Pledge to 1.5&nbsp;\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p>The change of administrations in Washington, D.C., appears to have accelerated the EV moves that GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra has been touting for the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanfleetreport.com\/news-gm-accelerates-toward-ev-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">past several years<\/a>. They now join several other major automakers with strong promises of both zero-emission vehicles and a less carbon-impactful operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeneral Motors is joining governments and companies around the globe working to establish a safer, greener, and better world,\u201d said Barra. In a LinkedIn post she added that GM\u2019s carbon impact comes primarily from tailpipe emissions of the vehicles it makes, so accelerating the move to zero-emission vehicles is critical. She also said GM would work with the Environmental Defense Fund to develop a \u201cshared vision\u201d of that all-electric future.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read:&nbsp;<a class=\"c-link c-message_attachment__title_link\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/shift\/2021\/02\/01\/how-much-does-it-cost-to-buy-electric-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-qa=\"message_attachment_title_link\"><span dir=\"auto\">How much does it cost to buy, own, and run an EV? It\u2019s not as much as you think<\/span><\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The company has moved forward by five years its goal of having all its facilities using 100% renewable energy. U.S. facilities aim to now hit that target in 2030 and global facilities are targeting 2035. She also said \u201cit is critical we improve the fuel efficiency of the gas- and diesel-powered vehicles many people still rely on\u201d to bridge the gap to EVs. The company also is \u201cworking to improve access to renewable-energy charging\u201d and promises a full range of EVs, led by its<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanfleetreport.com\/news-gmc-hummer-ev-first-edition-sells-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">GMC Hummer EV<\/a>&nbsp;pickup and<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanfleetreport.com\/news-cadillac-sings-a-new-tune-with-lyriq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Cadillac Lyriq<\/a><span>&nbsp;crossover<\/span>, both due in 2021-2022.<\/p>\n<p>This was the same company that four years ago joined the Trump administration in challenging the state of California\u2019s move to increase fuel economy standards for internal combustion engine vehicles and its move to mandate that all new vehicles sales be EVs in 2035. It\u2019s a big attitude shift for a company that sold less than 21,000<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanfleetreport.com\/road-test-2020-chevrolet-bolt-ev-premier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Chevrolet Bolt EVs<\/a>&nbsp;out of a total of more than 2.5 million vehicles sold in 2020.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ford &amp; others\u2019 steady course<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In contrast to GM\u2019s mixed messages (opposing California initiatives while continuing to promote its EV ambitions), its cross-town rival Ford has been steadfast on a similarly aggressive, if less dramatic, path to electrification. Ford has pledged to be carbon-neutral by 2050. It also \u2014 along with Volkswagen, BMW, Honda, and Volvo \u2014 supported California\u2019s fuel efficiency fight against the former administration. The company has a heavily promoted hybrid version of its best-selling F-150 pickup, even as it continues its lightweighting strategy to improve fuel economy. In addition, Ford has a variety of innovative materials initiatives to increase sustainability. It has mass-market EVs on sale in Europe and China and introduces the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanfleetreport.com\/flash-drive-volkswagen-id-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ID.4 crossover<\/a>&nbsp;in the U.S. this year. The company has lofty plans with dozens of EVs expected this decade from its various divisions\u2014Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Bugatti as well as its commercial vehicles. Volkswagen had promised to launch&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkswagenag.com\/en\/news\/2019\/03\/VW_Group_JPK_19.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">70 new electric models<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>worldwide by 2028 and hopes to have annual sales in the 15-22 million range by that year.<\/p>\n<p>Nissan, which led the U.S. market with its all-electric Leaf in 2010, will introduce its second EV this year\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanfleetreport.com\/news-nissan-introduces-electric-compact-crossover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the Ariya crossover<\/a>. It has also pledged to be carbon-neutral by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Volvo committed early to electrify all of its passenger vehicles, though it became clear quickly that the company\u2019s pledge covered technology ranging from mild hybrids through fully electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Hyundai Group talks about 44 \u201ceco-friendly\u201d vehicles being on the market by 2025. Similarly, Toyota is broadly focused on corporate CO<sub>2<\/sub><span>&nbsp;<\/span>reduction, including vehicle electrification and an assessment of the entire life cycle of a vehicle to reinforce sustainability and fewer emissions.<\/p>\n<h3>And then there\u2019s Tesla<\/h3>\n<p>Of course,<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanfleetreport.com\/safety-best-selling-ev-wins-top-safety-marks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Tesla<\/a>&nbsp;produces only electric vehicles, so it falls outside this transition discussion, but it\u2019s worth noting that the company delivered almost 500.000 vehicles worldwide (about half that in the U.S.) in 2020 and stands as the clear leader in EV production and sales. Given the new regime in Washington, D.C., and continuing regulatory stringencies in the E.U. and China, auto companies are clearly responding to market drivers, even though EV sales continue to be slight in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>In summary, GM has vocally tried to jump to the head of environmentally concerned and committed auto companies. The announcement\u2014all the OEM announcements\u2014is great. Now, we\u2019ll wait to see and drive the new EVs and FCEVs that will signal the fulfillment of the promises.
