{"id":2941,"date":"2021-02-09T19:28:43","date_gmt":"2021-02-09T19:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/?p=1338292"},"modified":"2021-02-09T19:28:43","modified_gmt":"2021-02-09T19:28:43","slug":"algorithm-estimates-covid-19-infections-in-the-us-are-three-times-higher-than-reported","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=2941","title":{"rendered":"Algorithm estimates COVID-19 infections in the US are three times higher than reported"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>An algorithm developed at the UT Southwestern medical center has estimated that there are almost three times as many&nbsp;COVID-19 infections in the US&nbsp;than the number of&nbsp;confirmed cases.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The model&nbsp;makes daily predictions of both total and current infections across the US and in the 50 countries worst affected by the virus.<\/p>\n<p>It calculated that more than 71 million people in the US&nbsp;had contracted COVID-19 by February 4, when there were only&nbsp;<span>26.7 million&nbsp;confirmed&nbsp;cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The model also estimated that 7 million people in the country currently have infections and are potentially contagious.<\/p>\n<p>In other countries, the algorithm also calculated far higher numbers of infections than those reported. In the UK, it calculated that there were nearly&nbsp;25 million&nbsp;\u2014 rather than around 4 million confirmed cases \u2014 while in Mexico, it predicted that there were&nbsp;almost 27.6 million instead of 1.9 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe estimates of actual infections reveal for the first time the true severity of COVID-19 across the U.S. and in countries worldwide,\u201d said study author Jungsik Noh in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utsouthwestern.edu\/newsroom\/articles\/year-2021\/covid-19-infections-in-the-us-nearly-three-times-greater-than-reported.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1338293 lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2021\/02\/Screenshot-2021-02-09-at-17.36.33.png\" alt=\"Estimate of actual number of cumulative cases after adjusting for underreporting versus the number of reported, or lab-confirmed, cases. Nonetheless, he says they\u2019re more accurate than the confirmed cases used to guide public health policies:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p>Knowing the true severity in different regions will help us effectively fight against the virus spreading. The currently infected population is the cause of future infections and deaths.
