{"id":2969,"date":"2021-02-10T13:31:26","date_gmt":"2021-02-10T13:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/?p=1338441"},"modified":"2021-02-10T13:31:26","modified_gmt":"2021-02-10T13:31:26","slug":"anti-trashbug-ai-scours-sky-snaps-to-spot-sea-plastic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=2969","title":{"rendered":"Anti-trashbug AI scours sky-snaps to spot sea plastic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Scientists from the University of Barcelona have developed an AI app called Marlit that detects floating marine litter in aerial photos.<\/p>\n<p>The system could help clean up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\/resources\/issues-briefs\/marine-plastics#:~:text=At%20least%208%20million%20tons,causes%20severe%20injuries%20and%20deaths.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">8 million tons of plastic trash<\/a> that enter our oceans every year,&nbsp;harming marine species, human health, tourism, and the climate.<\/p>\n<p>The litter is typically assessed by direct observations from boats and planes. But the vast ocean areas and volumes of data make it hard for researchers to accurately monitor the impact.<\/p>\n<p>Marlit reduces the workload by applying AI to images of the seas.&nbsp;In tests, the system automatically spotted and quantified floating plastics with a reliability of over 80%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAutomatic aerial photography techniques combined with analytical algorithms are more efficient protocols for the control and study of this kind of pollutants,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2021\/02\/210208145919.htm#:~:text=MARLIT%2C%20an%20open%20access%20web,experts%20of%20the%20Faculty%20of\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> study first author Odei Garcia-Garin.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/shift\/2021\/02\/08\/polestar-batteries-blockchain\/\">How Polestar is using blockchain to increase transparency<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>The system is powered by a deep learning approach that uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs) capable of learning from unstructured or unlabelled data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The models were trained on over 3,700 images of&nbsp;the Mediterranean coast in Catalonia taken by drones and aircraft.
