{"id":2977,"date":"2021-02-11T00:55:58","date_gmt":"2021-02-11T00:55:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/?p=1338505"},"modified":"2021-02-11T00:55:58","modified_gmt":"2021-02-11T00:55:58","slug":"facebook-begins-test-to-show-less-political-content","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=2977","title":{"rendered":"Facebook begins test to show less political content"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/tnw?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2020%2F08%2FUntitled-design-2020-08-11T182518.964.png&amp;signature=4c20dcbe0715a647a5130ca219a21528\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Following Zuckerberg\u2019s promise that Facebook would <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/plugged\/2021\/01\/28\/zuckerberg-promises-facebook-will-show-less-political-content-from-now-on\/\">show less political content<\/a> in the future, the company has begun testing just that.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2021\/02\/reducing-political-content-in-news-feed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">blog post<\/a> today, the company announced it would begin to \u201creduce the distribution of political content in News Feed for a small percentage of people in Canada, Brazil, and Indonesia this week,\u201d with the US to follow \u201cin the coming weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company says it\u2019s using these first tests to figure out the best way to rank political content, surveying users on their experience. It also clarified that authoritative COVID-19 information and content from official government agencies will be exempt from the changes.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook says its goal is not to remove political content altogether or make it harder to actively find, but rather to find a way to respect everybody\u2019s \u201cappetite for it.\u201d The company notes that political content only makes up 6% of what US Facebook users see, citing its own&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2020\/11\/what-do-people-actually-see-on-facebook-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">November 2020<\/a> report. It\u2019s worth noting, however, that this report was made in response to evidence that the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2020\/11\/how-much-political-news-do-people-see-on-facebook-i-went-inside-173-peoples-feeds-to-find-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">saturated users with right-wing news<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the company acknowledges \u201c<span>even a small percentage of political content\u201d can have an adverse effect on their social media experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The imminent change does beg the question of whether reducing political content is really the answer. I don\u2019t mind getting my news from Facebook; the problem is when I see misinformation in posts and comments alike.
