{"id":2995,"date":"2021-02-11T15:36:24","date_gmt":"2021-02-11T15:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/?p=1338609"},"modified":"2021-02-11T15:36:24","modified_gmt":"2021-02-11T15:36:24","slug":"hear-this-kandinsky-painting-with-googles-psychedelic-ai-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=2995","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Hear\u2019 this Kandinsky painting with Google\u2019s psychedelic AI tool"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/neural?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2021%2F02%2FUntitled-design-2021-02-11T124053.154.png&amp;signature=b50a1946dd0e550fb23bf018a5b9949f\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Google has&nbsp;launched a new AI tool that lets you listen to the sounds that famed artist Vassily Kandinsky may have heard as he painted.<\/p>\n<p>The experiment explores the artist\u2019s synesthesia, a neurological condition that causes one sense to trigger another.<\/p>\n<p>In Kandinsky\u2019s case, he\u2019d see colors and shape when he heard music, and hear music when he painted.<\/p>\n<p>The abstract art pioneer tried to evoke the sensation through his artworks and writings:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"6\">\n<p>The sound of colors is so definite that it would be hard to find anyone who would express bright yellow with bass notes or dark lake with treble.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Google\u2019s collaboration with Paris\u2019 Centre Pompidou imagines the sounds he heard in 1925 as&nbsp;he painted \u201cYellow, Red, Blue,\u201d&nbsp;a striking display of geometric art.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/shift\/2021\/02\/08\/polestar-batteries-blockchain\/\">How Polestar is using blockchain to increase transparency<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Google&nbsp;Arts &amp; Culture team <a href=\"https:\/\/artsandculture.google.com\/story\/the-sound-of-colours\/0ALymHuhPl1jLg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">describes<\/a> the lithograph as a small instrumental work:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"7\">\n<p>An extraordinarily gifted artist, he arranged \u2018colored sounds\u2018 into \u2018color symphonies\u2019\u2026 The character of the colors reflected for him the harmonies and dissonances of a melody.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The researchers first trained Google\u2019s Transformer neural network on music from Kandinsky\u2019s time. They then used the system to generate new scores inspired by the sounds.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L-h6wQ2rP4M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen>[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Sound artist Antoine Bertine, who worked on the project, said the initial idea was to use&nbsp;machine learning&nbsp;as an archeological tool:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>By inviting the machine to express itself, the music kind of emerged by itself, and it felt that as artists we were more the intermediary from Kandinsky\u2019s time to today, rather than the interpreters of the theory ourselves.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The experiment resulted in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/artsandculture.google.com\/experiment\/sgF5ivv105ukhA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Play a Kandinsky<\/a>&nbsp;an interactive tool that lets you explore Kandinsky\u2019s synesthesia and generate your own musical compositions based on his work.<\/p>\n<p>You can hear the sounds he associated with different&nbsp;colors and shapes, or listen&nbsp;to the entire masterpiece as the artist may have heard it.<\/p>\n<p>But the best part lets you become the composer of the painting, by clicking on colored shapes to produce the&nbsp;music&nbsp;that you see.<\/p>\n<p>In my case, the string ensemble of the red triangle caused an acute sense of restlessness, but I attribute much of that to this interminable lockdown.
