Google has restructured its responsible AI teams in the wake of Timnit Gebru\u2019s firing, sparking further anger from the researcher and her supporters.<\/p>\n

The ethical AI teams will now be overseen by Marian Croak, a Black Google executive who\u2019s credited with inventing the Voice over Internet Protocol.<\/p>\n

Google announced her appointment in a blogpost<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Now, she\u2019s taking on a new project: making sure Google develops artificial intelligence responsibly and that it has a positive impact. To do this, Marian has created and will lead a new center of expertise on responsible AI within Google Research.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sources told Bloomberg<\/a> that Croak will report to Google AI lead Jeff Dean, whose involvement in Gebru\u2019s departure was slammed<\/a> by members of her team.<\/p>\n

Her exit followed a dispute over a research paper<\/a> she\u2019d co-authored. Dean insisted Gebru had resigned, but for all intents and purposes, she was fired<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The reorganization of Google\u2019s AI teams aims to quell the outrage caused by her termination \u2014 but it\u2019s already triggered further indignation.<\/p>\n

Gebru tweeted<\/a> that Google was \u201ctrying to neutralize one Black woman with another\u201d while \u201charassing, terrorizing, and gaslighting my team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Tech workers<\/a>, diversity groups<\/a>, and former colleagues have also criticized the move.<\/p>\n

Among Gebru\u2019s supporters is former diversity recruiter Abril Christina Curley, who says<\/a> she was fired from the firm because \u201cthey were tired of hearing me call them out on their racist bullshit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Abil tweeted<\/a> that Google \u201cwants nothing more than to physically run us down and exhaust us to the point of breaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Margaret Mitchell, who founded Google\u2019s Ethical AI team \u2014 and is currently locked out of her corporate account for downloading material related to Gebru \u2014 said she found out about the reorganization through Bloomberg\u2019s report.<\/p>\n

Google may hope the restructuring subdues the internal dissent, but it\u2019s only inflamed the outrage of Gebru\u2019s supporters.<\/p>\n
