After a mostly uneventful transit through space, it managed to touch down on the surface of Mars at 20:55 UTC on 18 February 2021.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.9852941176471\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I love rocks. But that won\u2019t stop it from fulfilling its mission to send samples back to Earth. Once Perseverance obtains the proper samples, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nasa-mars-landing-perseverance-rover-rock-sample-return-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the plan<\/a> is to fire them back to Earth in rockets.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter lazy\" title=\"NASA\/JPL-CALTECH\" src=\"https:\/\/cbsnews1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2021\/02\/17\/ad3bb9ce-03cd-406d-810a-6fa5141053ec\/thumbnail\/620x464\/8dec488551bca9543777e37341d48019\/pia23496-mav-launch.jpg#\" alt=\"pia23496-mav-launch.jpg \" width=\"620\" height=\"464\" data-lazy=\"true\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>But this isn\u2019t slated to happen until at least 2031.
