Fans of the \u2018Avatar: The Last Airbender\u2018 and \u2018The Legend of Korra\u2018 (including yours truly) just recieved a surprise piece of awesome news today: Nickelodeon is making an animated movie to replace the godawful live action one. Production begins this year.<\/p>\n

Better yet, Nickeloden is creating a whole new studio dedicated to expanding the universe. Fittingly dubbed Avatar Studios, it\u2019s being helmed by series\u2019 creators Michael DiMartino<\/a> and <\/span>Bryan Konietzko<\/a>, who will act as chief creative officers. Avatar Studios productions, including upcoming series and movies (plural!) will premier on Nickelodeon and Paramount+.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes also with a bit of a dig at the upcoming live-action Netflix remake<\/a> of the original series.<\/p>\n

DiMartino and Konietzko were originally involved in that series, before departing<\/a> in August of 2020 because Netflix didn\u2019t want to make the creators\u2019 original vision happen. To that end, Brian Robbins, President ViacomCBS Kids & Family (which owns Nickolodeon), says \u201cAvatar Studios is a way to give Mike and Bryan the resources and runway to open up their imaginations even more and dive deeper into the action and mythology of Avatar.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While I\u2019m still holding out a little hope the Netflix series won\u2019t be a total trainwreck \u2014 according to Variety<\/a>, that project has not been canceled \u2014 I\u2019m far more excited about the idea of new storylines in the original animated medium. Avatar and Korra are masterpieces, in my book, and I can\u2019t wait to see what\u2019s next in the Avatar universe.<\/p>\n
