An international team of astronomers has now found three previously unknown exoplanets orbiting that star.<\/p>\n<p id=\"190a\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>The Pisces-Eridanus stream of stars was only recently discovered \u2014 at the end of 2018 \u2014 despite stretching across one-third of the sky. Stars within this stream average only around 3% of the age of our own<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cj iu\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/new-horizons-views-wall-of-hydrogen-near-edge-of-solar-system-947e774d1d2?source=friends_link&amp;sk=e83953098d17099c72af9d90ae9a809b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8129\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cThis system checks a lot of boxes for astronomers. It\u2019s only 120 million years old and just 400 light-years away, allowing detailed observations of this young planetary system. This telescope, designed to study the entire sky, locates exoplanets as they transit, or pass \u201cin front of\u201d their star, as seen from Earth.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0619\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>Through 2019 and 2020, the sights of the infrared Spitzer Space Telescope were set toward the TOI 451 system, conducting follow-up studies of these<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cj iu\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/toi-561-system-and-extreme-exoplanets-dr-lauren-weiss\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">alien worlds<\/a>. Spitzer was powered down at the start of 2020, forever ending its mission exploring the skies in infrared wavelengths.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b81e\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>Additional archival data was obtained from observations of the star taken from 2009 to 2011 by NASA\u2019s Near-Earth Object Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) satellite.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph><em>[Read:&nbsp;<a class=\"c-link c-message_attachment__title_link\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/plugged\/2020\/11\/27\/build-pet-friendly-gadget-experts-animal-owners-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-qa=\"message_attachment_title_link\"><span dir=\"auto\">How do you build a pet-friendly gadget? We asked experts and animal owners<\/span><\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"8ce8\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>The innermost of these newly-discovered planets is slightly less than twice the diameter of the Earth, and revolves around TOI 451 once every 46 hours. The middle world is more than three times as large as the Earth, and its year lasts a little over nine days. The outermost of these world huddles its parent star at just one-third of the distance between Mercury and the Sun.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1c27\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>This proximity to the nuclear furnace of TOI 451 results in<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cj iu\" href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/the-cosmic-companion\/episodes\/The-TOI-561-System-and-Extreme-Exoplanets---Dr--Lauren-Weiss--U-of-Hawaii---February-2--2021-eprai0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">scorching temperatures on these alien worlds<\/a>. The innermost world, TOI 451 b, is thought to have surface temperatures around 1.200 C (2,200 F). At the outskirts of this system, TOI 451 d sports surface temperatures around 450 C (840 F).<\/p>\n<p id=\"4437\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>While smaller planets would quickly lose their atmosphere to pressure from the star, the significant mass of these worlds is likely to hold onto atmospheres, researchers speculate.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1e02\" class=\"iy iz dm cd ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp jq jr js jt ju jv ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>You\u2019re a star!<\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"iv iw ix\" readability=\"6\">\n<p id=\"a899\" class=\"gt gu hs gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cThe sun and its retinue of planets drift as a group through the vast gulfs of space that separate the stars.\u201d \u2014 Barney Oliver<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"0797\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>The star TOI 451 is thought to have a<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cj iu\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/mysterious-blue-ring-nebula-reveals-secrets-of-binary-stars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">pair of stellar companions<\/a>, orbiting far beyond the orbits of the newly-discovered planets.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b766\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cThe sun in this planetary system is very similar to our own sun but much younger. By studying these planets in the context of others, we can piece together the picture of how planets form and develop,\u201d<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cj iu\" href=\"https:\/\/news.dartmouth.edu\/news\/2021\/02\/young-planets-teenage-sun-give-space-studies-lift?utm_source=dhome&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=carousel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Newton states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9034\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>Stellar streams like the one housing TOI 451 form as clusters of stars or small dwarf<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cj iu\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/the-dark-secret-of-galaxies-may-not-be-so-dark-after-all-1326c3504f76?source=friends_link&amp;sk=17a9d02bbfb6b28c9742f0c2a37c8527\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">galaxies<\/a>&nbsp;are torn apart by gravitational forces, stretching out the members of the group like a peloton of stars, continuing to race along their original trajectory. Eventually, these streams disperse, spreading their stars around space.<\/p>\n<p id=\"dac6\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>The Pisces-Eridanus stream currently stretches 1,300 light years in length. From Earth, it appears to stretch across 14 constellations. Image credit: NASA\/GSFC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"9bb7\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>In 2019, a team of researchers led by Jason Curtis at Columbia University examined dozens of members of the stream seen by TESS.<\/p>\n<p id=\"836e\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>Younger stars tend to rotate more quickly, and show darker sunspots than older counterparts. Astronomers are able to see these dark paths as they rotate around their star, revealing the rotational rates of these stellar bodies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6fb1\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>This study showed that the<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"cj iu\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/stellar-turbulence-shapes-activity-of-stars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">stars<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/a>\u2014 and thus the stream itself \u2014 is only about 120 million years old \u2014 just 12.5 percent of the age previously calculated. This significantly-younger estimate was also in line with measurements of lithium and excess ultraviolet light from the stars.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4eed\" class=\"gt gu dm gv b gw gx gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq de ej\" data-selectable-paragraph>While the first planet in a solar system like our own was only discovered in 1995, astronomers currently know of 4,400 planets orbiting other stars. This loose rocky ring likely orbits at about the distance Jupiter keeps from the Sun.
