But wouldn\u2019t it be fantastic if we could do all of that without a phone?<\/p>\n<p>I hope that\u2019s possible through Niantic\u2019s AR glasses \u2014 a teaser of which Niantic CEO John Hanke shared on Twitter.&nbsp;<span>The company, which is also behind Pokemon GO<\/span>&nbsp;<span>didn\u2019t say much about when these will be available or exactly what they\u2019ll be capable of.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.9310344827586\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Exciting to see the progress we\u2019re making to enable new kinds of devices that leverage our platform\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yYglk4q89G\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/yYglk4q89G<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Hanke (@johnhanke) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/johnhanke\/status\/1376624749787242499?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">March 29, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While&nbsp;<span>Pok\u00e9mon<\/span>&nbsp;GO on AR glasses might be a pipe dream, for now, it\u2019s no secret that Niantic wants to <a href=\"https:\/\/nianticlabs.com\/blog\/building-future-ar-maps\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">map the world for augmented reality<\/a>. Last year, the firm announced that&nbsp;<span><a href=\"https:\/\/nianticlabs.com\/blog\/building-future-ar-maps\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the Niantic Real World Platform<\/a>&nbsp;to enable AR experiences on gadgets ranging from phones to \u201cthe wearable devices of the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Niantic showed off a demo of real-world Pokemon GO gameplay on Hololens 2 headset at Microsoft\u2019s Ignite developer conference.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.805633802817\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019re thrilled to collaborate with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Microsoft?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">@microsoft<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HoloLens?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">@hololens<\/a> on new experiences that will weave together the digital and physical world. The company hasn\u2019t indicated when it plans to unveil these glasses. We\u2019ve asked Niantic for a comment, and we\u2019ll update the story if we hear back.<\/p>\n<p>If analyst predictions are correct, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/apple-vr-ar-headset-plans-latest-rumors-and-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Apple\u2019s own AR glasses are coming in 2025<\/a>,&nbsp;and Oppo\u2019s set to release <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/plugged\/2020\/11\/17\/oppo-will-launch-ar-glasses-with-gesture-control-in-2021\/\">an AR headset with gesture control this year<\/a>. So the AR glasses market is going to be very hot for the next few years.
