{"id":4893,"date":"2021-05-05T08:11:44","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T08:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1349550"},"modified":"2021-05-05T08:11:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T08:11:44","slug":"brainboxes-find-new-way-to-revive-dead-lithium-ion-batteries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=4893","title":{"rendered":"Brainboxes find new way to revive dead lithium-ion batteries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/shift?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2021%2F05%2Flithium.jpg&amp;signature=a21a374062e4edeef0b026bb160e145e\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Scientists led by&nbsp;<span>Finland\u2019s&nbsp;<\/span>Aalto University have a found a way to revive&nbsp;lithium-ion batteries and to facilitate their reuse, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2021\/05\/04\/lithium-saturation-to-make-old-batteries-new\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">pv magazine<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cRe-lithiation\u201d explained<\/h3>\n<p>The process, called \u201cre-lithiation,\u201d<span>&nbsp;aims t\u03bf reverse the gradual loss of lithium which accounts for the battery\u2019s performance loss.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Through an electrolysis process the scientists managed to rejuvenate&nbsp;lithium in battery electrodes, and then compared the performance of the \u201crefreshed\u201d electrodes with those from a brand new battery.<\/p>\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/chemistry-europe.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1002\/cssc.202100629\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">results<\/a>, the re-lithiation process succeeded, and the&nbsp;<span>capability and recharge capacity of the old battery were almost the same as in brand new ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The advantages<\/h3>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t really mean that a revived battery can replace a new one, but that it can potentially reduce<span>&nbsp;the cost and complexity from recycling battery components and materials.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The current methods, which deal with a degraded battery structure, require expensive and energy-consuming processes to separate and purify the materials before they can be reused.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBy reusing the structures of batteries we can avoid a lot of the labor that is common in recycling and potentially save energy at the same time,\u201d explained Aalto University professor Tanja Kallio.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><i><span>Do EVs excite your electrons?
