Google, Facebook, and WhatsApp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/industry\/media\/facebook-google-whatsapp-start-complying-with-india-s-new-it-rules-in-part-11622380151655.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">have already complied<\/a> with India\u2019s new intermediary rules. However, the microblogging platform is yet to do that.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, the&nbsp;Delhi high court directed Twitter to comply with these rules within three weeks. Notably, Twitter had asked the government of India for <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/twitter-india-compliance-it-rules-freedom-of-speech\">at least a three-month extension<\/a> to implement the necessary steps.<\/p>\n<p><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">[Read:&nbsp;<\/i><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\"><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/this-dude-drove-an-ev-from-the-netherlands-to-new-zealand-here-are-his-3-top-road-trip-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/this-dude-drove-an-ev-from-the-netherlands-to-new-zealand-here-are-his-3-top-road-trip-tips\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">This dude drove an EV from the Netherlands to New Zealand \u2014 here are his 3 top road trip tips<\/a><\/i><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">]<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Lawyer Amit<span>&nbsp;Acharya had <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/appointed-grievance-officer-as-per-new-it-rules-twitter-tells-delhi-high-court-7337849\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">filed the petition against the social network last week<\/a> to register a grievance against \u201cdefamatory, false and untrue\u201d tweets of some users. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The petition stated that Twitter doesn\u2019t have a grievance officer based in India,, which is against the country\u2019s IT rules.&nbsp;<\/span>However, as per Twitter, it has recently appointed <a href=\"https:\/\/help.twitter.com\/en\/rules-and-policies\/report-twitter-abuse-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">an interim local grievance officer in India<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/india-social-media-ott-rules-2021\">India\u2019s new IT rules<\/a>, significant social media intermediaries \u2014 any platform with more than 5 million users \u2014 have to appoint a nodal officer, a compliance officer, and a&nbsp;<span>grievance officer in India. Plus, they must publish compliance reports regarding complaints they receive every six months.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Twitter has been in a tussle with the Indian government multiple times this year. In February, it was caught up in an issue of first blocking and then unlocking of tweets related to <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/twitter-blocks-users-in-india-from-viewing-the-tweets-of-several-major-accounts\">the long-running farmers\u2019 protest<\/a> by prominent accounts.
