It\u2019s also terrifyingly true. Three things make <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/decades-of-attempts-show-how-hard-it-is-to-land-on-mars-heres-how-we-plan-to-succeed-in-2021-69734\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Mars landings difficult<\/a> \u2013 the planet\u2019s gravity, Mars\u2019 atmosphere and our distance from the red planet.<\/p>\n<p>Mars is less massive than Earth, but its atmosphere is also perilously thin. The Moon has almost no atmosphere so landers can use retrorockets \u2013- rocket engines that provide thrust in an upwards direction \u2013 to slow their descent to the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p>Earth\u2019s atmosphere is thicker than that of Mars and that allows craft to glide gently down to the surface. Mars\u2019 atmosphere is too thin for that sort of Earth-like gentle gliding, but as a craft plummets towards the Martian surface it can reach speeds of more than 12,000 mph.<\/p>\n<p>Trying to use retrorockets would subject a lander to so much turbulence that the craft could be ripped apart. What\u2019s more, any craft trying to land on Mars suffers from the effects of friction as it hurtles through the atmosphere, risking burning up.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, because the distance from Earth to Mars is so huge, scientists and engineers on Earth can\u2019t send commands to a craft instantaneously. Instead, they have to pre-program a sequence of actions that the craft will perform as it descends through the Martian atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>From entry to landing takes about seven minutes. Here, scientists and engineers have no control over the craft \u2013 they have to trust that everything will go right and the craft will land safely. If it doesn\u2019t, a crash landing could quite literally shatter thousands of hopes and dreams. It\u2019s a nerve-racking experience \u2013 which is why it\u2019s been dubbed the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/7-minutes-of-terror-a-look-at-the-technology-perseverance-will-need-to-survive-landing-on-mars-155046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">seven minutes of terror<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Today, scientists model, simulate and track every aspect of a Mars mission \u2013 but there are some things they can only learn through landing on the red planet.<\/p>\n<h2>From crashes to Curiosity<\/h2>\n<p>The first Mars launch was in 1962, five years after the space age began with the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/sixty-years-after-sputnik-taking-stock-and-looking-to-the-future-85017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">launch of Sputnik<\/a>. Image via NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until 1971 that an artificial satellite landed on Mars. The Soviet Union launched its Mars 2 probe, consisting of an orbiter and a descent module. While the orbiter sent back data successfully, the descent module didn\u2019t work as planned and crashed on the Martian surface. The same year, the Soviet Union\u2019s Mars 3 probe successfully sent a lander to Mars without it crashing \u2013 but it only <a href=\"https:\/\/nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/nmc\/spacecraft\/display.action?id=1971-049F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">worked for two minutes<\/a>. Mars 6 crash landed, while Mars 7 didn\u2019t land at all.<\/p>\n<p>It was only in 1976 that the US sent anything to Mars. Viking 1 and Viking 2 both landed successfully on Mars, becoming the first two operational landers. The 1980s saw the Soviet Union\u2019s two Phobos missions, both of which failed because of computer issues.<\/p>\n<p>The 1990s weren\u2019t particularly good for Mars landings, either. Russia\u2019s Mars 96 failed during launch. Happily, Nasa\u2019s Sojourner rover touched down in 1996, becoming the first Martian rover success story. On Christmas day 2003, the UK\u2019s Beagle 2 touched down on Mars, but one of its solar panels failed to open and the mission was lost. Fortunately they improved, with the successful landings of Spirit and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/opportunity-of-a-lifetime-nasas-4-000-days-roving-mars-41062\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Opportunity in 2004<\/a> and Phoenix in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The 2010s also started well, with <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/curiosity-catches-a-whiff-of-methane-on-mars-and-a-possibility-of-past-life-35595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the Curiosity rover<\/a> touching down in 2012. Sadly Schiaparelli, the European-Russian lander, <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/what-missing-lander-means-for-europes-quest-to-find-life-on-mars-67338\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">was lost in 2016<\/a>. Now, five years later, the perfect landings of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/mars-insight-why-well-be-listening-to-the-landing-of-the-perseverance-rover-153672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Perseverance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/on-its-first-try-chinas-zhurong-rover-hit-a-mars-milestone-that-took-nasa-decades-161078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Zhurong<\/a> are a bright start to the new decade.<\/p>\n<p>Landing on Mars is hard, but scientists are learning all the time \u2013 and just as they build on their successes, they also learn from their failures. Now our computers are better than ever, and concepts from failed missions help scientists to build the successful missions of tomorrow.
