European cities bid adieu to sexist mobility policies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>European cities are constantly making mobility greener, but there\u2019s one issue they still haven\u2019t tackled: making it gender-neutral.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yup, gender can be a big factor in mobility. It\u2019s been shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/civitas.eu\/sites\/default\/files\/civ_pol-an2_m_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">women and men have very different travel needs and patterns<\/a><\/span><span>, but this hasn\u2019t really been considered in mobility plans of city governments \u2014&nbsp;until now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Cities in Europe now increasingly consider the gendered effects of transport policies and use them to inform adoption of less car-centric systems,&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-07-05\/european-cities-are-making-transport-systems-more-gender-neutral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-07-05\/european-cities-are-making-transport-systems-more-gender-neutral\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">Bloomberg<\/a><span>&nbsp;reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Studies show that while men mostly do a single back-and-forth trip to work by car, women are more likely to make multiple trips per day. Not only do women move more frequently, they also do it mostly by public transport or walking, as you can see from the graph below.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed 183w\"><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<p>This underlines two major needs for female commuters: the reduction of urban congestion that threatens the safety of pedestrians, and the accessibility to mass transit alternatives.<\/p>\n<h3>What are cities doing exactly?<\/h3>\n<p><span>To address these issues, Paris introduced last year its plan to become a \u201c<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/eurocities.eu\/latest\/parisians-will-live-within-a-15-minute-radius\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/eurocities.eu\/latest\/parisians-will-live-within-a-15-minute-radius\/\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">15-minute city<\/a><span>.\u201d The idea is that residents access all essential services within 15 minutes of their home by foot, bike, or public transport \u2014 which in turn will&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/15-minute-cities-dont-just-improve-mobility-theyre-better-for-equality-syndication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/15-minute-cities-dont-just-improve-mobility-theyre-better-for-equality-syndication\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">improve gender equality<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a similar vein, Barcelona has launched its \u201c<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/energy-cities.eu\/best-practice\/superblocks-free-up-to-92-of-public-space-in-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/energy-cities.eu\/best-practice\/superblocks-free-up-to-92-of-public-space-in-barcelona\/\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">superblocks<\/a><span>\u201d scheme to direct traffic to the outskirts of each city block, and Austria is implementing the \u201c<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmk.gv.at\/en\/topics\/mobility\/1-2-3-klimaticket\/1-2-3_climate_ticket.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.bmk.gv.at\/en\/topics\/mobility\/1-2-3-klimaticket\/1-2-3_climate_ticket.html\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">1-2-3 Climate Ticket<\/a><span>\u201d this year which gives access to its public transport nationwide for a flat a $3.6 per day, paid annually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are also stirrings in Germany, as center-left parties in Munich&nbsp;have&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/spd-rathausmuenchen.de\/news\/gendergerecht-planen-eine-verkehrswende-fuer-alle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/spd-rathausmuenchen.de\/news\/gendergerecht-planen-eine-verkehrswende-fuer-alle\/\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">pushed for city-planning based on gender equality<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It goes without saying that these initiatives represent only minor steps towards a gender-equal mobility model. But reducing urban traffic and enhancing safety and accessibility are definitely a step in the right direction which will benefit everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><i><span>Do EVs excite your electrons?
