But who\u2019s gonna come out on top? Self-driving startup AutoX has once again thrown its hat into the ring, to get the sought-after crown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the Crowne Plaza Shanghai Anting yesterday, the company launched the upgraded AutoX Gen5 system, promising to offer better navigation capability, enhanced safety, and overall \u201csuperiority to the competitor\u2019s systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image take the new \u201csuperiority to the competitor\u2019s systems\u201d aside, AutoX might actually have quite a few advantages over Baidu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Firstly, Baidu\u2019s autonomous vehicles always have a safety driver on board \u2014 while AutoX\u2019s taxis are&nbsp;<\/span><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">fully driverless<\/i><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>The reason is that Shenzen, where the company\u2019s robotaxis run, is the only city in China that allows truly driverless vehicles on all public roads.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile Baidu\u2019s taxis are in Beijing, where they can only operate within a small specially designated zone and need to have a safety driver on hand.<\/span>Similarly, such&nbsp;vehicles may only drive within closed campuses or zones, and for that reason Baidu is operating at&nbsp;<span class=\"xn-location\">Beijing\u2019s<\/span>&nbsp;Shougang Park, covering a 3 square kilometer range.<\/p>\n<p><span>So while Baidu only has about 3 square kilometers for its robotaxis, AutoX\u2019s fleet is running in Shenzhen\u2019s Pingshan district \u2014 a much more impressive 104.6 square kilometer operational zone.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>However, Baidu already has plans to expand to 30 Chinese cities and its already bagged a special promotion during the upcoming Winter Olympics, with one of the venue\u2019s located in the robotaxi zone in Beijing. This could explain AutoX\u2019s big push now to strengthen its position against Baidu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So let\u2019s take a look at what AutoX\u2019s new upgrade actually entails.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Gen5 upgrade<\/h3>\n<p>The upgrade promises to take the company\u2019s tech to the next level with the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>50 sensors in total<\/li>\n<li>28 cameras capturing a total of 220 million pixels per second<\/li>\n<li>6 high resolution LiDAR offering 15 million points per second<\/li>\n<li>4D radar with 0.9-degree resolution encompassing 360 degrees around the vehicle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>AutoX believes that by adding these new features \u2014 along with an additional vehicle control unit of 2200 TOPS computing power \u2014 its robotaxis will have zero blind spots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I have to say that Baidu\u2019s robotaxis don\u2019t look too good in comparison\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span>They\u2019ve only got 2 LiDAR and 6 surround cameras \u2014&nbsp;<\/span><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">in total<\/i><span>.<\/span><span>Or well, they also got one ultrasound and one millimeter wave radar, which are adequate as supplementary functions. And its reasonable to say that the Gen5 upgrade presents some notable advancements that might actually do justice to AutoX\u2019s claims for improved safety and navigation.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><i><span>Do EVs excite your electrons?
