Image credit: EFE\/Ariel Marinkovic<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"2872\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Using the Atacama Large Millimeter\/submillimeter Array (ALMA), astronomers were able to see Io as it passed into the shadow of <a class=\"cl kf\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/juno-storms-on-jupiter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a>, where sulfur dioxide gas freezes, falling out of the atmosphere of the Galilean moon.<\/p>\n<p id=\"989b\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cWhen Io passes into Jupiter\u2019s shadow, and is out of direct sunlight, it is too cold for sulfur dioxide gas, and it condenses onto Io\u2019s surface. During that time we can only see volcanically-sourced sulfur dioxide. We can therefore see exactly how much of the atmosphere is impacted by volcanic activity,\u201d explained Statia Luszcz-Cook from Columbia University, New York.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c91c\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Using this instrument, astronomers examined sulfur monoxide (SO) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) rising up from <a class=\"cl kf\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/volcanoes-on-mars-you-want-olivine-with-that-73b9cabfe342?source=friends_link&amp;sk=5e52bc4fb533721e7fc5034b18787e8a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">volcanoes<\/a>. Study of the data revealed volcanic releases constitute 30 to 50 percent of the atmosphere of Io.<\/p>\n<p id=\"291e\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>As Io entered the shadow of Jupiter \u201cthe SO2 flux density dropped exponentially, and the atmosphere reformed in a linear fashion when re-emerging in sunlight, with a \u2018post-eclipse brightening\u2019 after \u223c10 minutes. While both the in-eclipse decrease and in-sunlight increase in SO was more gradual than for SO2, the fact that SO decreased at all is evidence that self-reactions at the surface are important and fast, and that in-sunlight photolysis of SO2 is the dominant source of SO,\u201d researchers describe in <a class=\"cl kf\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2009.07729\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em class=\"hu\">The Planetary Science Journal<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"hw hx hy hz ia ib\"><figcaption class=\"ir is da cy cz it iu cf b fd ch gg\">In the video above, the atmosphere of Io seen by ALMA, layered with optical images of Jupiter\u2019s innermost large moon. Dagnello\/NASA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"c388\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>The third, unexpected, gas was also found \u2014 potassium chloride (KCl).<\/p>\n<p id=\"5c8c\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cWe see KCl in volcanic regions where we do not see SO2 or SO. This is strong evidence that the magma reservoirs are different under different volcanoes,\u201d Luszcz-Cook stated.<\/p>\n<p id=\"dd77\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Like <a class=\"cl kf\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/there-is-something-big-hiding-on-the-moon-what-is-it-1c5f8b811c95?source=friends_link&amp;sk=4321c1b31bbef21bcf1e6ee3a12f5fcf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">our own moon<\/a>, Io is tidally locked to its home planet, with one side always facing Jupiter.
