The question of whether or not life exists on other worlds suggests pondering if extraterrestrial beings might be able to find life on our home world.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4883\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>More than 4,500 exoplanets are currently known to astronomers, many of which were found as they orbited in front of their parent star as seen from Earth, dimming light from the stellar surface.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ff7c\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cLet\u2019s reverse the viewpoint to that of other stars and ask from which vantage point other observers could find Earth as a transiting planet,\u201d <a class=\"cl iv\" href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2020\/10\/smile-wave-some-exoplanets-may-be-able-see-us-too\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lisa Kaltenegger<\/a>, associate professor of astronomy at Cornell University\u2019s Carl Sagan Institute stated.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c39c\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Astronomers identified 1,004 stellar systems featuring a Sun-like star and <a class=\"cl iv\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/seeing-life-on-exoplanets-around-white-dwarfs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">exoplanets<\/a> orbiting within their habitable zone, with moderate temperatures.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9e26\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>One key to the study was searching for worlds in line with the Earth\u2019s ecliptic \u2014 the plane drawn out by our planet as it orbits the Sun. Alien astronomers on worlds roughly in line with our orbit would see the Earth pass in front of the Sun.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph><em>[Read: <span class=\"c-message_attachment__title\"><a class=\"c-link c-message_attachment__title_link\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/politics\/2020\/10\/16\/what-audience-intelligence-data-tells-us-about-the-2020-us-presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-qa=\"message_attachment_title_link\"><span dir=\"auto\">What audience intelligence data tells us about the 2020 US presidential election<\/span><\/a>]<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4962\" class=\"iw ix do cf iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp jq jr js jt el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Something in the air<\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"ju jv jw\" readability=\"7\">\n<p id=\"365b\" class=\"gv gw hu gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cI believe alien life is quite common in the universe, although intelligent life is less so. Some say it has yet to appear on planet Earth.\u201d \u2014 Stephen Hawking<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"e94a\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Light passing through our atmosphere would reveal the presence of large concentrations of <a class=\"cl iv\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/ancient-stars-atmosphere-reveals-large-amounts-of-oxygen-6355af07d16d?source=friends_link&amp;sk=47ee120849558d94d89c7d59afd8417e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">oxygen<\/a>, along with methane and other gases revealing life on our world.<\/p>\n<p id=\"89f8\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Astronomers are just now developing the ability to search the atmospheres of planets orbiting other stars, looking for telltale signs of life. (Video credit: Cornell University)<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fJxDMD6SfMI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p id=\"98a9\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>The <a class=\"cl iv\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/how-the-james-webb-space-telescope-will-see-oxygen-in-alien-atmospheres\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a>, due for launch in 2021, will be capable of searching the atmospheres of distant planets, searching for the telltale signs of life.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d649\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cThe main way we identify planets orbiting distant stars is by measuring regular dips in starlight caused by planets blocking out bits of their sun,\u201d Dr. <a class=\"cl iv\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/news-opinion\/news\/2020\/10\/21\/Australian-invention-to-find-new-Earths-exoplanets-photonics-AI.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Barnaby Norris<\/a> of the University of Sydney stated.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"8257\" class=\"iw ix do cf iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp jq jr js jt el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Don\u2019t twinkle, twinkle little star\u2026<\/h2>\n<p id=\"5dc9\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy jy ha hb hc jz he hf hg ka hi hj hk kb hm hn ho kc hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Movements in Earth\u2019s atmosphere create the twinkling commonly seen in stars. Although beautiful on a starlit night, it plays havoc with astronomical observations. Because of this, nearly all exoplanet discoveries were made using space-based telescopes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fe36\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Adaptive optics utilize a laser to measure distortion in the <a class=\"cl iv\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/spitzer-spies-surface-of-exoplanet-for-signs-of-atmosphere-de769c68ce?source=false---------3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">atmosphere<\/a>. This information is fed to computerized motors which warp mirrors, correcting for the flickering.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ad69\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>A new photonic wavefront sensor developed at the University of Sydney uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to correct for this distortion on ground-based telescopes. This could allow astronomers to search <a class=\"cl iv\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/the-interior-of-exoplanets-could-point-the-way-to-finding-life-854c50ee3837?source=friends_link&amp;sk=a6bfa8d7dbd25f40559106aa493b8cae\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">exoplanets<\/a> for the chemical fingerprints of life.<\/p>\n<p id=\"853a\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>\u201cIf we\u2019re looking for intelligent life in the universe, that could find us and might want to get in touch. We\u2019ve just created the star map of where we should look first,\u201d Kaltenegger said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8bc1\" class=\"gv gw do gx b gy gz ha hb hc hd he hf hg hh hi hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs dg el\" data-selectable-paragraph>Some of the stars identified in this study can be seen from <a class=\"cl iv\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/worlds-more-habitable-than-earth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> without the need for binoculars or a telescope.
