Together with an amazing line-up of experts, we will explore the future of AI during TNW Conference 2021.&nbsp;<a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/conference\/neural#tickets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">Secure your online ticket now<\/a>!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The race to get humans to Mars is heating up. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/6\/24\/china-plans-for-first-manned-mission-to-mars-in-2033\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">China<\/a> recently joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2016\/oct\/11\/obama-mars-mission-nasa-habitats-space-travel-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">USA<\/a> in targeting t<span>he 2030s<\/span> for crewed missions to the planet, but both their plans face enormous hurdles.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main concerns is the threat posed by particle radiation from the sun, stars, and galaxies. These particles could increase the risk of cancer or cause acute radiation sickness during missions.<\/p>\n<p>New radiation modeling suggests astronauts can be protected from these dangers \u2014 as long as their journeys are over within roughly four years.<\/p>\n<p>Per the <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1029\/2021SW002749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">research paper<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"7\">\n<p>This study provides the first realistic ballpark estimate of the duration of the mission to Mars, a feat that is certainly challenging but is still possible.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The research <span>combined geophysical models of particle<\/span> radiation <span>with simulations of how it would affect a spacecraft and its passengers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The calculations suggest that the thickness of a <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/space\">spacecraft<\/a> shield could play a key role on the trips. While relatively thick material may help protect astronauts, making it too thick could increase their radiation doses.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also estimated that the optimal timing for a flight to Mars would be when solar activity is at its peak.<\/p>\n<p>The team believes a trip to Mars and back during this time is conceivable.<\/p>\n<p><span>Yuri Shprits, a UCLA research geophysicist and co-author of the study paper, said the voyage could be done in under two years:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p>This study shows that while space radiation imposes strict limitations on how heavy the spacecraft can be and the time of launch, and it presents technological difficulties for human missions to Mars, such a mission is viable.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Greetings Humanoids!
