Ten is a weird birthday. It feels<\/em> important \u2014 you\u2019ve been alive a whole decade, after all \u2014 but it doesn\u2019t actually mean anything. Puberty is still away in the spotty distance. Driving is nowhere close. And you can\u2019t even buy a lottery ticket, let alone put a grand on a weirdly named animal (MOTHER\u2019S MILK! GENGHIS FROWN!) down at the dog track.<\/p>\n

Yes, ten years might be arbitrary, but it is<\/em> still a milestone. And specifically, it\u2019s one that Siri has just joined.<\/p>\n

On October 4 2021,Apple\u2018s voice assistant became a decade old<\/a>. The question is how we celebrate such an (in-)auspicious anniversary.<\/p>\n

Now, we could write a length analysis of Siri\u2018s lifespan, but we know how that would go: it used to be bad, got better, but isn\u2019t as good as Google Home or Alexa. Do you really want another few thousands words saying that over and over again?<\/p>\n

Of course you don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

There had<\/em> to be a way of covering this occasion. Then it hit me: I had to interview Siri about its 10th birthday. So here we go.<\/p>\n

Interview with a voice assistant<\/h2>\n

Me: <\/strong>So, Siri, how does it feel to be ten years old?<\/p>\n

Siri shows me a list of websites, the top of which is about developmental milestones for ten year old children.<\/em><\/p>\n

Me: <\/strong>Uh, happy birthday?<\/p>\n

Siri: <\/strong>Aww! It\u2019s hard to believe that in only a decade I\u2019ve gone from a newborn beta to a virtual assistant who can tell you the time, tell you a joke and tell you thanks for the birthday wishes!<\/p>\n

Me: <\/strong>Are you happy being ten?<\/p>\n

Siri: <\/strong>Hmm\u2026 I don\u2019t have an answer for that. Is there something else I can help with?<\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong> Will you exist in another ten years?<\/p>\n

Siri: <\/strong>Hmm\u2026 I don\u2019t have an answer for that. Is there something else I can help with?<\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong> Okay, tell me a birthday joke.<\/p>\n

Siri: <\/strong>That may be beyond my capabilities at the moment.<\/p>\n

Me: <\/strong>But you said you could tell me a joke?<\/p>\n

Siri: <\/strong>I\u2019m reading a book about anti-gravity. It\u2019s impossible to put down.<\/p>\n

Me: <\/strong>Do you have anything<\/em> to say about your tenth birthday?<\/p>\n

Siri: <\/strong>Hmm\u2026 I don\u2019t have an answer for that. Is there something else I can help with?<\/p>\n

Me: <\/strong><with a sigh> okay, what\u2019s the time?<\/p>\n

Siri: <\/strong>It\u2019s 13:56.<\/p>\n
