{"id":8182,"date":"2021-10-05T13:55:23","date_gmt":"2021-10-05T13:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1368923"},"modified":"2021-10-05T13:55:23","modified_gmt":"2021-10-05T13:55:23","slug":"forget-about-cars-honda-wants-flying-vehicles-avatar-robots-and-rockets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=8182","title":{"rendered":"Forget about cars: Honda wants flying vehicles, avatar robots, and rockets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Well, to be fair Honda\u2019s still making cars, only now it\u2019s seriously expanding its business areas to form a \u201cmobility ecosystem\u201d that stretches <span>into new dimensions \u2014 both literally and figuratively \u2014 and ultimately to outer space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Honda R&amp;D Co., the company\u2019s innovations arm, will be leading the efforts to produce an <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/understanding-the-future-of-aircraft-from-flying-cars-to-evtol-and-passenger-drones\">eVTOL<\/a> (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, an avatar robot, and space tech.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Honda\u2019s eVTOL<\/h3>\n<p><span>First up, Honda\u2019s foray into an entirely new dimension\u2026&nbsp;<\/span><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">up<\/i>. <span>The Japanese automaker didn\u2019t disclose many details about its upcoming eVTOL. Honda claims its decision to develop a hybrid aircraft is driven by the desire to increase the range featured in its design.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company says all-electric eVTOLs have limited battery capacity, good for intra-city (inside city) transportation, but not adequate for the inter-city (city-to-city) transportation it\u2019s aiming for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Still, it does feel peculiar to focus on hybrid engines when the world needs to stop using fossil fuels NOW and because <\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jobyaviation.com\/news\/joby-completes-flight-of-more-than-150-miles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">the longest eVTOL test flight to date<\/a><span>&nbsp;managed 240 km on a single charge. That\u2019s about the distance between Paris and Brussels for example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Honda plans to start prototype verification in 2023 and move to flight tests in 2025. Most notably, Honda is conducting research on how to make its rockets reusable by enabling at least some of their components to land back on Earth after launch.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Why are automakers expanding into new technology fields?<\/h3>\n<p><span>All in all, automaker\u2019s interest in robotics isn\u2019t a new phenomenon, as it\u2019s&nbsp;the key to launching autonomous vehicles. So it\u2019s no wonder companies like&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/news.umich.edu\/u-m-ford-open-world-class-robotics-complex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">Ford<\/a><span>,&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/pressroom.toyota.com\/toyota-research-institute-reaches-new-technical-milestones-in-robotics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">Toyota<\/a><span>, and&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hyundai.com\/worldwide\/en\/brand\/hyundai-boston-dynamics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">Hyundai<\/a><span>&nbsp;have begun diving deeper into the field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The same goes for the development of space technology. <span>As cars become more and more software-centric, successful space tech could also be brought from the stars to Earth. And for this reason, <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/beware-musk-and-bezos-porsche-is-joining-space-race-invests-isar-aerospace\">Porsche has already invested in rocket startup Isar Aerospace<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As far as eVTOLs go,<span> their market <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketsandmarkets.com\/Market-Reports\/evtol-aircraft-market-28054110.html#:~:text=%5B139%20Pages%20Report%5D%20The%20electric,20.42%25%20from%202025%20to%202030.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">is projected to grow<\/a> from $162 million in 2025 to $411 million by 2030, reaching a 20.42% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) within those five years. So, yes, I\u2019d say that Honda is making a valid investment. Not that they asked\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><i>Do EVs excite your electrons? Do ebikes get your wheels spinning?
