Unsurprisingly, Google has been keen to highlight the field\u2019s more positive impacts.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the tech giant unveiled two new AI-powered attempts to support sustainable travel.<\/p>\n<p>The first is eco-friendly routing for Google Maps. The service has been updated with a new model that\u2019s designed to reduce a driver\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p>The model analyzes factors such as road incline and traffic congestion to display the most fuel-efficient route.<\/p>\n<p>As well as cutting carbon emissions, the feature could help users save money on gas. The search giant announced that it\u2019s testing the use of AI to optimize traffic light timing.<\/p>\n<p><span>Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the system cut fuel consumption and delay times by 10-20% during a test in Israel. <\/span>The company nows plans to expand the pilots \u201cto Rio Janeiro and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The project joins an array of AI-based <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/12\/18\/world\/ai-smart-traffic-lights-transform-commute-spc-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">efforts to control traffic signals<\/a>.
