{"id":8210,"date":"2021-10-06T16:48:47","date_gmt":"2021-10-06T16:48:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1369105"},"modified":"2021-10-06T16:48:47","modified_gmt":"2021-10-06T16:48:47","slug":"eu-parliament-calls-for-ban-on-predictive-policing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=8210","title":{"rendered":"EU Parliament calls for ban on predictive policing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/neural?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2021%2F10%2FUntitled-design-6.jpg&amp;signature=bd2d200f5608719539b9bca12a7b18c0\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The European Parliament has called for bans on predictive policing and biometric mass surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>In a resolution adopted on Tuesday, MEPs also voted to prohibit social scoring systems, the use of AI in judicial decisions<span>,<\/span> and <span>private facial recognition databases \u2014 like the ClearviewAI system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A majority of lawmakers (377 to 248) backed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/A-9-2021-0232_EN.html?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the wide-ranging resolution<\/a> on the use of AI in criminal law and policing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bulgarian MEP Petar Vitanov, the resolution\u2019s author, called the vote \u201c<span>a huge win\u201d for European citizens:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p><span>For the first time ever, we are calling for a moratorium on the deployment of facial recognition systems for law enforcement purposes, as the technology has proven to be ineffective and often leads to discriminatory results. We are clearly opposed to predictive policing based on the use of AI as well as any processing of biometric data that leads to mass surveillance.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The risks of these systems have already been exposed. A predictive policing system used in the Netherlands, for example, was found to <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/dutch-predictive-policing-tool-designed-to-ethnically-profile-study-finds\">specifically target people of Eastern European origin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the resolution is non-binding, the vote could be a strong indicator of what MEPs want from <a href=\"https:\/\/oeil.secure.europarl.europa.eu\/oeil\/popups\/ficheprocedure.do?reference=2021\/0106(COD)&amp;l=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the EU\u2019s highly-anticipated AI Act<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Greetings Humanoids!
