According to a report by <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com.\/Business\/Business-deals\/Sony-nears-acquisition-of-US-anime-streaming-service-Crunchyroll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Nikkei<\/em><\/a>, Sony is close to finalizing a deal to buy the service for about \u201cmore than 100 billion yen,\u201d or about 955 million US dollars.<\/p>\n<p>AT&amp;T is Crunchyroll\u2019s current parent company, having bought it in 2018. Though Crunchyroll isn\u2019t quite the size of Hulu or Netflix, at about 70 million free subscribers&nbsp;(3 million paying) its specialized content could help Sony build strong foundations with a loyal audience. The company has already seen major success with the release of the animated&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Demon_Slayer:_Kimetsu_no_Yaiba_the_Movie:_Infinity_Train\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Demon Slayer<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>movie, which became the <a href=\"https:\/\/comicbook.com\/anime\/news\/demon-slayer-movie-anime-box-offie-record-spirited-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">highest-grossing movie in Japan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anime\u2019s clout is also evidenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/netflix-unveils-5-new-japanese-anime-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Netflix\u2019s increasing forays<\/a> into the category.
