After <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/youtube-rewind-2020-canceled\">canceling<\/a> last year\u2019s Rewind because nobody wanted to look back at 2020, the company has decided to cancel rewind for good (perhaps because 2020 never really ended, did it?).<\/p>\n<p>The yearly round-up of popular creators and trends has been increasingly maligned through the years, peaking (or should I say, umm, valley-ing?) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YbJOTdZBX1g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">2018<\/a> with what is literally the most disliked video ever posted to YouTube, at over 19 million dislikes. You\u2019ve got to screw up pretty big when you know, you are <em>YouTube<\/em>. And <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/youtube-rewind-2019\">2019<\/a>\u2018s Rewind didn\u2019t fare much better.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.7974683544304\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Thank you to all the creators involved in Rewind \u2013 we\u2019ll be \ud83d\udc40 for your Rewinds as we refocus our energies on celebrating you and the trends that make YouTube \ud83d\udd25 with a different and updated kind of experience \u2013 stay tuned! \u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kI69C24eL0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/kI69C24eL0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 YouTube Creators (@YouTubeCreators) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YouTubeCreators\/status\/1446103025500577796?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">October 7, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The company confirmed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tubefilter.com\/2021\/10\/07\/youtube-no-longer-making-year-end-rewind-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Tubefilter<\/a> that it would no longer be making the compendium videos, which is particularly notable because this would have been the 10th year of Rewind.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, YouTube says it\u2019s not ending the videos because of the criticism but, according to TubeFilter, because \u201c<span>because its platform has become so massive that it is impossible to encapsulate its vastness and diversity within a minutes-long compilation.\u201d While that\u2019s true, to me it seems like that has long been the case \u2014 it just used to be better at making Rewind videos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Instead, YouTube is pointing people towards end-of-year videos made by creators with their own unique perspectives. I suppose that\u2019s safer&nbsp;than having a corporate behemoth try to encapsulate everything its audience cares about.<\/p>\n<p>That said, YouTube doesn\u2019t appear to be giving up on recaps altogether.
