But in the case of a Tesla or other electric vehicle, this is not always possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Well, this happened to Alan Puccinelli, who shared his experience on Twitter. Insufficient power\u201d and then everything just locks up. No ability to shift to neutral. No releasing parking brake\/ emergency override. The car is bricked in the middle of a 6 lane highway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There was no time to even get to the shoulder. I\u2019m dead in the water in the middle lane of southbound traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You\u2019re probably thinking, \u201coh shit,\u201d about now. I spoke to Alan to find out more. Fortunately, the hazard lights worked in his Model S Tesla, and the doors opened. He could also open the windows. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Luckily, some nearby California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) workers could help cone off the car and help direct traffic around it until a tow truck showed up 45 minutes later.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Not just Tesla&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-offset-key=\"1pdqt-0-0\">Ok, hold up before you send me hate letters for writing anything <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/against-tesla-transport-authorities-a-toothless-tiger\"><span data-offset-key=\"1pdqt-1-0\">negative about Tesla.<\/span><\/a><span data-offset-key=\"1pdqt-2-0\">Let\u2019s get to the big white lumbering elephant in the room (or on the road). This is a problem <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"1pdqt-2-1\">NOT<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"1pdqt-2-2\"> limited to Tesla.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jalopnik.com\/a-tesla-bricking-itself-on-the-highway-is-a-reminder-th-1847734019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">According<\/a> to Jason Torchinksky, this is an industry-wide problem with EVs. Every EV has some way to get the car into neutral. But all the major EVs sold require the car to be at least partially functional to access the controls to get it into a tow or free-rolling mode, as these are usually accessible through the car\u2019s&nbsp;center-stack touch screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For example, Ford and Tesla require the touch screen to be functional, meaning you need access to <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/assets.teslastatic.com\/roadside_assistance_extract.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">at least some 12V or main battery power<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As Alan noted:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"7\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When buying the car, I had no idea that I wouldn\u2019t be able to push the car. Tesla rates as one of the safest vehicles on the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Who you gonna call?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Even worse, when Alan\u2019s car bricked it, he lost the main power to the console of your car, and the ability to look at the manual. \u201cI can\u2019t just open up a glove box and refer to how do X.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Alan thankfully had his phone. Tesla roadside support is only available through text chat support. Yep, you\u2019re stuck in the middle of a highway frantically typing on your phone. There is no number listed anywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He recalls:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"5\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It really frustrated me that there was no ability to escalate or convey a better sense of urgency.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fortunately, he finally found a number via Google to speak to a live human and found that they had already escalated the situation through customer support.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The problem of towing a Tesla or other EV<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, if you fail to use a Tesla authorized service, you risk them not reimbursing your insurance repair costs. Further,&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/assets.teslastatic.com\/roadside_assistance_extract.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">transporting a bricked Tesla is complicated<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, requiring a bit of know-how, or you face the risk of&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.motorbiscuit.com\/how-do-you-tow-an-electric-vehicle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">damaging your car during towing<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> further and even voiding the warranty. Many electric vehicles don\u2019t have a neutral position, allowing the car to move the wheels without affecting the motor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Alan shared:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I was fortunate that the tow truck driver had received more training than the average. I imagine moving forward, this is going to be more common and will require training. It\u2019s a bit disconcerting when the guy says, \u2018oh, I have to deal with these things all the time\u2019\u2026.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There is literally no manual override<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Earlier this year,&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a36904751\/porsche-taycan-recall-announced-power-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Porsche recalled the Taycan electric four-door<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration\u2018s (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation received complaints that vehicles completely lost power while owners were operating the electric cars.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Further, there are situations where&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deboersauto.com\/blog\/issues-you-could-experience-with-electronic-parking-brake-systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">electronic parking brake system<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;fails on ICE vehicles, which shows that digital hazards aren\u2019t restricted to EVs.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We can\u2019t get the basics right. What does this mean for the future of vehicle automation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ok, so let\u2019s break down the issues of Alan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/watch-tesla-with-hyped-fsd-beta-9-hurt-innocent-bush\">Tesla failure<\/a>. <em>We have no manual override to get the car to a safe place<\/em>. If the dashboard is not functioning correctly, we have no means to access the manual. If we want to call a service rep in an emergency, we\u2019re supposed to type to them in chat. If our car needs towing, we risk damaging the engine in the process.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To say it\u2019s a woeful scenario for EVs is an understatement. It bodes <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/toyotas-e-palette-is-suspended-from-tokyo-paralympics\">even worse for autonomous vehicles<\/a>. Automakers have promised us a future where cars are smart, connected, and intuitive \u2014 and able to think and act without human intervention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Alan noted:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tesla prides itself that a car should know what it needs. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For example, when it\u2019s raining, it will turn the windshield wipers on<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But when it comes to a severe situation, it\u2019s a disaster.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>These cars don\u2019t sound very smart<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To me, a truly smart car could diagnose and respond to system failure. In an ideal world it would be something like, when the car is malfunctioning, it can alert the driver, get somewhere safe of its own volition (ok, not always possible). It should be able to send a message to road services to send out a crew. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Service staff should be able to take over car functionality remotely or send an over-the-air update if the problem is digital, not mechanical. These basic safety capabilities are just not there yet in an unpredictable scenario.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So what was wrong with Alan\u2019s Tesla?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A Tesla service advisor attributed the failure due to an isolation fault in the rear-drive unit. Alan <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/repkord\/status\/1442274197791596544\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">shared<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They confirmed based on this failure and how the car locked down, there was nothing I could have done to get the vehicle to roll despite my repeated efforts to activate tow mode and release the e-brake via the console while it was still available.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They didn\u2019t know if this failure mode could still occur with a new drive unit or if they could push a software fix. Nor did they seem to know how pervasive this issue could be with newer\/other models.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Alan sent a letter to Tesla explaining the incident. The issue has been escalated to corporate, but he\u2019s still waiting for a response.
