And why do we need it for EV batteries?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Although lithium-ion batteries have long been the focus of EV development, issues such as battery aging and safety<span>&nbsp;still aren\u2019t fully understood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s mainly because current battery management systems can obtain<span> little information from a battery, and with poor real-time capability. They also can\u2019t store or process large amounts of data during the operation of a vehicle.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t lose your hope just yet, because digital twin tech could actually be a huge game-changer.<\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s a digital twin?<\/h3>\n<p>Basically, a <span>digital twin is a <em>virtual simulation<\/em> of a physical asset.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So in our case, we have an EV battery and a <em>virtual replica<\/em> of it that\u2019s linked to its physical counterpart.<\/p>\n<h3>How does it work?<\/h3>\n<p>Simply put, what\u2019s connecting the real battery with its twin is the transfer of data and information.<\/p>\n<p><span>The digital twin uses sensors to receive two types of information: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Real-time operational data<\/li>\n<li>Past usage data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With this information the virtual simulation can get an <span>all-encompassing representation of the battery\u2019s variables: <\/span><span>usage patterns, environmental conditions, current performance, temperature, state of charge, etc.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As a result, the digital twin can produce <span>a very accurate replica of the conditions inside the battery pack \u2014 in other words, it can mimic the battery\u2019s behavior.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Most notably, though, the twin can analyze the <span>historical and real-time battery data with machine learning algorithms. For instance, it may send parameters that limit the maximum current during braking if the temperature shows a risk of overheating.<\/p>\n<p><span>As a result, the digital twin offers insights, recommendations, and tools that can not only optimize battery behavior and performance, but also predict battery life and potential breakdowns. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Has the tech been actually applied?<\/h3>\n<p>As you can imagine, digital twin tech can very well be the holy grail of EV batteries, so there\u2019s indeed a number of companies working to implement it.<\/p>\n<p>The most astonishing advancement so far has been achieved by the <span>Real-Time Electrical Digital Twin Operating Platform (REDTOP) project, led by battery analytics firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silverpowersystems.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Silver Power Systems<\/a> (SPS) in partnership&nbsp;with Imperial College, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-news\/new-cars\/new-levc-range-extender-camper-van-due-60-mile-ev-range\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">London Electric Vehicle Company<\/a> (LEVC), and JSCA,&nbsp;the research-and-development&nbsp;arm of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-news\/industry-news-environment-and-energy\/british-designed-wevc-coupe-reinvents-ev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Cornwall-based Watt Electric Vehicle Company<\/a> (WEVC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The ninth-month project gathered data from<span> 50 LEVC TX range-extender taxis and a <\/span>WEVC coup\u00e9 electric sports car, which travelled collectively <span>over 500,000km. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Each vehicle was equipped with SPS\u2019s own data-collection device, which communicates over-the-air with the company\u2019s cloud-based software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The collected data was then <span>analyzed by the company\u2019s EV-OPS battery management platform and processed by Imperial College researchers. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In September, Silver Power Systems <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silverpowersystems.com\/pioneering-ev-trial-results-in-worlds-most-advanced-battery-digital-twin-capable-of-predicting-battery-lifetime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> that the project has succeeded in creating <span>the \u201cworld\u2019s most advanced digital twins of actual EV batteries,\u201d which could offer not only an accurate view of real-time battery performance and state-of-health, but also the potential to predict battery lifespan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The next big step will be applying the tech to commercial electric vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>HT \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/cjme.springeropen.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s10033-021-00577-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Chinese Journal of Medical Engineering<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comsol.com\/blogs\/digital-twins-and-model-based-battery-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">COMSOL<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ionenergy.co\/resources\/blogs\/improve-battery-life-digital-twin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ION Energy<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><i>Do EVs excite your electrons?
