This artist thinks so"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>Neuroscientists at Columbia University <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/how-does-the-brain-process-art-80541420\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>observed a curious thing<\/span><\/a><span>. When they asked a group of test subjects to concentrate on a painting of an angel wielding a sword, they found it triggered responses in the subjects\u2019 wrists. Others have reported the sensation of dancing when observing Degas\u2019 Ballerinas. This is due to a process called embodied cognition. When we view a piece of art, our brain mirrors actions depicted on the canvas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Not only can art inspire physical action, it can also stimulate emotion and make the intangible feel tangible. According to eco artist <a href=\"https:\/\/thijsbiersteker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Thijs Biersteker<\/a>:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p><span>Context is also important in the sense that, when you go to a museum or a festival, you\u2019re open to new ideas. That\u2019s the moment that people really resonate with new messages, allowing them to be digested.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Sounds neat\u2026 but why does it matter? Well, EV manufacturer Polestar is betting on art\u2019s stimulating powers to get its sustainability message across.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company recently released a sustainability report for its new Polestar 2. While the report is an essential part of Polestar\u2019s push towards brutal, bare naked transparency, the team behind it had to ask themselves whether it was the&nbsp;<\/span><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">best<\/i><span>&nbsp;way to achieve it. <\/span><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>If no one reads sustainability reports besides the nerdiest of current EV drivers, do they make any impact at all?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That\u2019s why they teamed up with Biersteker to create an interactive installation inspired by key data from the report. The piece titled, <\/span><i><span>We Harvest Wind<\/span><\/i><span>, is now on display at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>TNW got an exclusive interview to find out about the backstory behind this intriguing piece and the underlying call to action.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Transforming cold hard data into climate art<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>\u201c<span>When I was growing up, I noticed that I stopped resonating with news headlines. We read for years about deforestation in the Amazon and the dangers of plastics in our oceans, but it didn\u2019t change anything. <\/span>This is really dangerous,\u201d Biersteker said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He started to work with researchers from around the globe to see how he could use their rough data to create something that connects people to the numbers in a deeper way:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"6\">\n<p><span>I think immersive art installations that you can control and that you feel empowered by leave you with a message. Just like one small change in our lifestyle can have a much bigger impact than we might realize.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Could an installation make you think twice about choosing canvas or plastic at the grocery store or tossing that cigarette butt onto the street? You\u2019ll see when we fail and you\u2019ll see when we progress. It\u2019s really a way for us to connect with our consumers and build trust.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But, as she explained, they had to ask themselves, if there\u2019s a report and no one reads it, will it make an impact?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"7\">\n<p><span>We published this report and talked about it in very data science nerdy ways, but we just felt that we might not be reaching the broader community.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>That\u2019s when they decided to contact Biersteker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When reading the report, the data around the impact of simply switching to renewable energy sources was particularly striking for the artist. Zeroing in on this, he decided to create a massive wind turbine that could be powered by visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p><span>I want people to connect with the facts that are in this report. I want them to experience the power of change by their hands. Switching to green energy is such a simple act, that should be facilitated by governments and supported by consumer action. So I wanted to communicate the simplicity of that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>You just press the fan and this world comes to life that\u2019s powered by wind. I think if they take that away \u2013 that the power is in their hands and it\u2019s not that hard \u2013 then I\u2019m happy. Klar\u00e9n explained:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p><span>We have eight and a half years and there are 20,000 plus components that go into a car. But we also have the list of emissions related to the materials and the components going into the cars. So we\u2019re very well aware from our LCA data of what we need to tackle.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Biersteker\u2019s studio teamed up with their researchers to create the installation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Polestar is already making headway in creating a suitable material to replace plastic in its cars, so Biersteker decided to incorporate it in his installation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>While the center of the installation was built using 60 kg of used plastic PET bottles, the outer wings were created using Polestar\u2019s square-patterned\u2019 plastic replacement. Each installation also comes with a <span>materials passport, which makes it easier to deconstruct and recycle in the future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This might seem like a weirdly practical approach, but for Biersteker, the goal of each piece is that it\u2019ll have an \u2018end of life\u2019 \u2014 so there needs to be a plan in place for how to demolish his art after his death.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"17\">\n<p><span>I make something for the ages. It might be optimistic, but I hope that these awareness pieces I\u2019m creating about wind energy, deforestation, and plastic pollution are not needed in the future and actually become redundant. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For me it\u2019s logical that things end. And, as a creator, you are accountable for how your pieces end. Maybe it\u2019ll be there for 30 or 100 years, but at least I know I left it in a state that it\u2019s not leaving the world worse than it was.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>This is also why Biersteker\u2019s installations aren\u2019t for sale.&nbsp;If awareness pieces like this are sold to collectors or museums, they\u2019ll probably end up in a basement somewhere. \u201cThis reduces their function. I\u2019d rather have it shown somewhere to create that awareness,\u201d said Biersteker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Much like the installation, the Polestar team has also thought out an end of life plan for the Polestar 2 which is detailed in the LCA report.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What should you take away from this piece?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>Art is subjective. Everyone will experience a piece from their own point of view. We\u2019re going to do our part at Polestar to ensure that we decarbonize the production of our cars, but we have to be supported by an energy grid that is supplied with renewable energy.
