{"id":8585,"date":"2021-10-25T16:12:50","date_gmt":"2021-10-25T16:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1371024"},"modified":"2021-10-25T16:12:50","modified_gmt":"2021-10-25T16:12:50","slug":"algorithms-cant-replace-lewis-hamilton-even-if-theyre-faster-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=8585","title":{"rendered":"Algorithms can\u2019t replace Lewis Hamilton, even if they\u2019re faster drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen were racing for the Formula 1 title over the weekend, self-driving cars were fighting for the inaugural <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indyautonomouschallenge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC<\/span><\/a>) championship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Technical University of Munich (TUM) took the chequered flag at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The team bagged a cool $1 million after hitting an average speed of 218 km\/h on the fabled oval track.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The contest was an impressive showcase of self-driving engineering, but it didn\u2019t convince me that AI will soon replace human race car drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One reason for my skepticism is that the <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/algorithm-3\">algorithms<\/a> didn\u2019t prove they could compete with IndyCar drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Their top speeds were nowhere near <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondtheflag.com\/2020\/08\/14\/indy-500-marco-andretti-runs-fastest-lap-since-1996\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">the records set by humans<\/span><\/a>, and they were set in time-trials when no other cars were on the track. The EuroRacing team was pipped to the title due to a coding mistake, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/self-driving-race-cars-history-093300247.html?ncid=facebook_yahoonewsf_akfmevaatca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">AFP reports<\/span><\/a>. Their car set the fastest lap time of the race \u2014 223 km\/h \u2014 but lost out on average speed as it had been programmed to run five laps instead of the scheduled six. The PoliMOVE team also missed a chance to win when their GPS trackers shut down on the circuit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">These technical barriers, however, could soon be overcome. Indeed, the cars were doing overtaking during practice and may have reached higher speeds if the weather had been more forgiving. A bigger challenge will be attracting viewers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The IAC contest made for a strangely soulless spectacle. Algorithms could push racing cars to new limits, but they\u2019ll have a harder time&nbsp; capturing the public\u2019s imagination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Formula 1, the heated rivalry between Hamilton and Verstappen has inflamed the passions of fans. Their polarizing personalities and unpredictable behavior have incited compelling clashes both on the track and off. A competition between computers isn\u2019t likely to have the same emotional appeal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A bigger benefit of autonomous racing could be marketing. If self-driving cars can compete in high-speed motor races, it could reassure the public that they\u2019re safe enough to hit regular roads.
