No, Mark Zuckerberg hasn\u2019t resigned. And no, the company hasn\u2019t been broken up. It\u2019s a lot more significant than that. Facebook has changed the name of its holding company!<\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg announced at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebookconnect.com\/en-gb\/?utm_source=gg&amp;utm_medium=ps&amp;utm_campaign=14679562270&amp;utm_term=facebook+connect&amp;utm_content=546549904966&amp;utm_ad=131042143407&amp;utm_location=9045999&amp;utm_location2&amp;utm_placement=kwd-298448019356&amp;utm_device=c&amp;utm_matchtype=e&amp;utm_feed&amp;utm_adposition&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwlOmLBhCHARIsAGiJg7lNMoNq88EsZzqvoKkKyE2s2i-fLSIK_jdroFrRMhf-fC3aBYC2dsgaAlaUEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Facebook Connect<\/a> on Thursday that the company shall now be known as\u2026 drum roll please\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meta.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I must admit, I\u2019m disappointed. I had high hopes that Facebook would follow <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/facebook-changing-name-suggestions-analysis\">our name suggestions<\/a> of <span><strong>Nothing Suspicious Going On Here\u2122<\/strong><\/span><span> or <\/span><strong>:<\/strong>. Alas, the company has plumped for the type of bland brand name that you can only get by paying an ad agency millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>There is, however, a strategy behind the switch. <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/mark-zuckerberg\">Zuckerberg<\/a> announced the rebrand during a presentation about the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/metaverse\">metaverse<\/a> plans.<\/p>\n<p>The most eye-catching announcement was that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is being developed for the Oculus Quest 2 \u2014 but Zuckerberg said that gaming is just the start.<\/p>\n<p>There will also be fitness in the metaverse, apparently, as well as new ways working, travelling, learning, and commerce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the next chapter for our work \u2014 and we believe the internet overall,\u201d said Zuckerberg.<\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg will hope the rebrand persuades people that Facebook isn\u2019t just a social media hellscape \u2014 and perhaps he\u2019ll be successful.
