Greetings gadget fans. This week <\/span>Plugged<\/span> <\/span>In<\/em> was fed another newsletter (Mad Cow Disease-style) and is feeling\u2026 well, <\/span>weird.<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve spent a lot of time <\/span>writing about Apple of late<\/a> \u2014 and for good reason: it\u2019s the<\/em> master of consistently churning out perfectly capable products. Just look at something like the Apple Watch<\/a>. It\u2019s an amazing device, but it\u2019s made to be steady, rather than jaw-dropping. <\/span><\/p>\n

There are no wild new features, or crazy designs. It\u2019s simply another Apple Watch.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that\u2019s fine. Being normie is a-okay. It\u2019s\u2026 you know what? Fuck, I can\u2019t do this anymore. It\u2019s over: releasing batshit insane gadgets will always be cooler than playing it safe.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s why I\u2019ll always respect <\/span>Samsung for trying to make foldable phones happen<\/a>. Or LG for doing\u2026 well, whatever the hell this is:<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a downside to these products though: they aren\u2019t very good. On the \u201cbatshit\u201d spectrum they appear closer to the word\u2019s second syllable than first. And this isn\u2019t uncommon. In fact, the opposite. Making something is incredibly hard, let alone an item that stands alone in its particular category.<\/span><\/p>\n

But, once in a blue moon, there\u2019s an exception. A company that gets in a groove of releasing ridiculous, off-the-wall, and downright odd products that are somehow actually pretty fucking good?<\/span><\/p>\n

And that company, friends, is <\/span>Nintendo<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

If Apple is Coldplay, soullessly pumping out a slightly tweaked sound time and time again, <\/span>Nintendo is Bowie: an experimentalist with a populist edge. Will it sometimes release something that\u2019s utter shit? Of course<\/em>. But at its best will it be untouchable? You betcha. And right now Nintendo is on its early-70s Bowie hot streak.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the release of <\/span>the now-normal-but-once-revolutionary Switch<\/a>, <\/span>Nintendo has been pumping out a steady stream of weirdness. You know, like <\/span>a pretend robot you have to build<\/a>, <\/span>a plastic ring you squeeze to get ripped<\/a>, and <\/span>a cardboard VR kit<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the latest in this line? Well, that\u2019d be <\/span>Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n
