Well, kinda. People who already shelled out the $8.99?<\/span><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>Well, Gingers Labs, the company behind Notability, says it\u2019ll give you access to premium features for a year, but then you have to pay up. Here\u2019s its statement:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p><span>You will be able to continue using Notability as you do now for the next year for free. You will continue to have access to any items or technology you previously purchased. If you would like access to more premium content or technology like MyScript\u2019s Handwriting Recognition and Math Conversion, you may choose to subscribe at any point.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A lot of people who\u2019ve paid up for premium features in the past, are irked by this new model. I happily paid for the Mac and iOS versions of Notability separately all the way back in 2015, and it&#8217;s accompanied me through 3 degrees now. Here\u2019s the full comment:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"17\">\n<p class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhDF9XSiJM\">Apple\u2019s guidelines, 3.1.2(a) state:<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhDF9XSiJM\">If you are changing your existing app to a subscription-based business model, you should not take away the primary functionality existing users have already paid for. For example, let customers who have already purchased a \u201cfull game unlock\u201d continue to access the full game after you introduce a subscription model for new customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhD<span id=\">I think this applies to Notability and if enough users put a spotlight on this issue, might allow us premium purchasers to keep using it without subscription.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"_1qeIAgB0cPwnLhD<span id=\"><span>We\u2019ve asked the company to clarify if this change applies to the <\/span><span>app, and we\u2019ll update the story if we hear back.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Looking at this from the dev side <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>As a user, it\u2019s valid to be frustrated when you have to pay for a product and features that you\u2019ve already shelled out for in the past, but it\u2019s important to look at this from the dev side too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The nature of development and what people expect from apps has changed rapidly over the past few years.
