The heart and soul of America: the big-ass car. <\/span><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>This week they announced further&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/rules.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.rules.house.gov\/files\/BILLS-117HR5376RH-RCP117-18.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/rules.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.rules.house.gov\/files\/BILLS-117HR5376RH-RCP117-18.pdf\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">amendments<\/a><span>&nbsp;to the current&nbsp;<\/span><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">Build Back Better Act&nbsp;<\/i><span>before the House which offers some big wins for social spending and sustainable transport. This will bring more models into the credit scheme as it was formerly capped at $64,000 for vans, $69,000 for SUVs, and $74,000 for pickup trucks. Meanwhile, sedans still remain capped at $55,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>So, what can we gather from this? Well, this might make the transition to EVs smoother for truck lovers and SUV owners. Car ownership is deeply cultural in the US, so if we\u2019re going to aim for 100% electrified car fleet as soon as possible, making the \u2018cultural strain\u2019 as low as possible sounds like a good idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>I can also see this appeasing people who have practical concerns, like contractors, who use their personal vehicles for work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Putting US automakers first&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The US is already facing criticism by overseas automakers and Republicans for the bill\u2019s preference for <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/democrats-bill-4500-tax-credit-for-union-built-evs-unfair-or-proactive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">union-made vehicles<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;from local companies. \u200b\u200bIf successfully voted upon, it means consumers can claim an added $4,500 credit for vehicles assembled at a domestic&nbsp;<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">unionized<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;plant. In contrast, EVs that are American-made but not union-built qualify for a mere $500 extra in subsidies.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There was a plan to phase out tax credits after automakers hit 200,000 electric vehicles sold, but its cancelation means big automakers like GM and Tesla will continue to enjoy the credits.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__gutter\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__gutter__right\" role=\"presentation\" data-qa=\"message_content\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__blocks c-message_kit__blocks--rich_text\">\n<div class=\"c-message__message_blocks c-message__message_blocks--rich_text\">\n<div class=\"p-block_kit_renderer\" data-qa=\"block-kit-renderer\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"p-block_kit_renderer__block_wrapper p-block_kit_renderer__block_wrapper--first\" readability=\"9\">\n<h2 class=\"p-rich_text_block\" dir=\"auto\">The bill changes are good news for EV infrastructure and innovation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p-rich_text_block\" dir=\"auto\">Upping the maximum retail price of bigger vehicles eligible for the credit is only a part of the new proposals, other interesting updates include:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;$5 billion to replace certain heavy-duty vehicles, such as refuse trucks and school buses, with zero-emission vehicles through a new grant program at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">$17.5 billion towards decarbonizing federal buildings and fleets. This includes the installation of electric vehicle charging stations for government buildings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A $13.5 billion investment in <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/the-volvo-c40-recharge-offers-all-electric-green-luxury\">electric vehicle<\/a> infrastructure to support the development of an electric vehicle charging network. This funding will go toward the construction of charging infrastructure in publicly accessible locations, multi-unit housing structures, workplaces, and underserved areas. America lags behind much of the world regarding access to public EV charging, so this is sorely needed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">$7 billion in multiple loans and grant programs at DOE to support the development of innovative technologies and American manufacturing of zero-emission transportation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Significantly, the bill also includes a $9 billion investment into updating the energy grid through grants and loans for grid infrastructure modernizing. The US\u2019s legislative and infrastructural changes are already resulting in&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/ebike-investments-are-here-to-stay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">massive industry growth and investment.<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In February,&nbsp; a federal E-BIKE act<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> ebikes meant that <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/company-demonstrates-that-ebike-manufacturing-can-be-viable-in-europe\">ebikes<\/a> are no longer classified as motor vehicles or off-road vehicles but are properly defined within three classes. Owners can therefore ride them on the road, unlike in the UK and Australia.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The current bill before the House also dedicates $10 billion to high-speed rail expansion, which is a big deal for a country that has so greatly neglected public transport infrastructure for decades.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ultimately, this is the most significant US government investment we\u2019ve seen in sustainable transport.
