{"id":8777,"date":"2021-11-04T15:04:48","date_gmt":"2021-11-04T15:04:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1372152"},"modified":"2021-11-04T15:04:48","modified_gmt":"2021-11-04T15:04:48","slug":"where-the-good-goddamn-are-the-bikes-at-cop26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=8777","title":{"rendered":"Where the good goddamn are the bikes at COP26?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Among all the posturing and grandstanding about climate change, you\u2019ll see something that\u2019s noticeably absent at <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/cop26-australia-is-burning-in-international-embarassment\">COP26 in Glasgow<\/a> this week \u2014 cycling.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I saw a tweet this morning (I love Twitter), and it asked an excellent question:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"5.3740458015267\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Why is no one talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/bicycles?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#bicycles<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COP26?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#COP26<\/a>? \ud83d\udeb2\ud83d\udeb2\ud83d\udeb2\ud83d\udeb2\ud83d\udeb2<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cathmckenna?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">@cathmckenna<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dave Robertson (@DaveBikeSki) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DaveBikeSki\/status\/1456063883559452675?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">November 4, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Seriously, where are all the bikes and ebikes? How about some <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/suck-it-vans-cargo-bikes-are-the-delivery-captains-now\">cargo bikes<\/a> \u2014 they could be used to tow a few politicians far better than car cavalcades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> For transport, used by most of the world\u2019s population, the absence of cycling in any official capacity is at best laughable and, at worst, downright negligent.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For a greener future GET MORE PEOPLE CYCLING<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This week a global coalition of over 60 bicycle organizations, including the <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/ecf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">European Cyclists Federation&nbsp;<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and the&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldcyclingalliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">World Cycling Alliance<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, penned&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cop26cycling.com\/#letter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">an open letter<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to the COP26 attendees. It offers a clear message: if you want to get serious about fighting the climate crisis, get more people on bicycles and do it now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As the letter states:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"20.018099547511\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Worldwide, transportation is <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/topics\/transport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">responsible<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;for 24% of direct CO\u2082 emissions from fuel combustion. These include:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Creating and financing national cycling strategies and collecting data on cycling to guide infrastructural improvements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Focusing investments on building safe and high-quality cycling infrastructure. This includes incentives for communities historically marginalized from cycling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Providing direct incentives for people and businesses to switch from automobiles to bicycles for more of their daily trips.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Building synergies with public transport and foster combined mobility solutions for a multimodal ecosystem capable of covering all user needs without relying on a private car.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We\u2019ve seen an acceleration of <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/what-changes-to-the-build-back-better-act-mean-for-you\">pro-ebike laws and funding<\/a> proposals in the US. Still, for cycling to go mainstream, it needs to address <em>why<\/em> people prefer cars over bicycles \u2014 including issues of safety and road quality. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/goodordering.com\/blogs\/blog\/what-is-stopping-you-from-riding-a-bike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">survey by Good Ordering<\/a> a couple of years ago found that the perception of unsafe roads and concerns around bike parking and security are two of the biggest reasons people avoid cycling \u2014 and it\u2019s up to governments to act.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Let\u2019s not forget the most basic form of transport \u2014 walking<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, if we\u2019re talking about roads, I\u2019d also like to see some attention turned to the plain old act of walking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There are many cities without sidewalks or where broken concrete and potholes make it an obstacle course. As there was no public transport option between the clinic and the conference venue, I thought I\u2019d walk.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It was a lovely day, and I had plenty of time. I started walking the route suggested by Google Maps only to find it directed me to an overpass bridge that had car and bicycle lanes but no lane for walking. And I can\u2019t walk through a canal!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I ended up getting a Bolt. The driver told me this was a common problem for tourists and visitors unfamiliar with the city\u2019s layout. God forbid we want to take the fastest route too on foot.<\/p>\n<p>Getting people out of their cars \u2014 even just some of the time \u2014 is a pretty radical act when you think about the money machine that is the auto industry.
