{"id":8846,"date":"2021-11-09T14:08:58","date_gmt":"2021-11-09T14:08:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/TheNextWeb=1372601"},"modified":"2021-11-09T14:08:58","modified_gmt":"2021-11-09T14:08:58","slug":"the-facebook-whistleblowers-must-have-rules-to-rein-in-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.londonchiropracter.com\/?p=8846","title":{"rendered":"The Facebook whistleblower\u2019s must-have rules to rein in social media"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img-cdn.tnwcdn.com\/image\/neural?filter_last=1&amp;fit=1280%2C640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn0.tnwcdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fblogs.dir%2F1%2Ffiles%2F2021%2F11%2FUntitled-design.png&amp;signature=a76fc8c4146daee0e53f020c7606ac17\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Frances Haugen\u2019s testimony tour arrived in Brussels on Monday to a rapturous reception.<\/p>\n<p>The Facebook whistleblower told<span> European <\/span><span>lawmakers<\/span> that the EU\u2019s<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oeil.secure.europarl.europa.eu\/oeil\/popups\/ficheprocedure.do?lang=en&amp;reference=2020\/0361(COD)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Digital Services Act<\/a><span> (DSA) could set a \u201cglobal gold standard\u201d for online safety \u2014 as long as they make a few tweaks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The new rules \u2014 which are due to be finalized next year \u2014 are meant to improve content moderation. Haugen\u2019s comments on the regulation shone further light on how she wants online platforms to be policed.<\/p>\n<h2>Regulating big tech<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/facebook-whistleblower-frances-haugen\">Haugen<\/a> had previously suggested a range of measures to curb harmful content:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Requiring platforms to publicly disclose their internal research<\/li>\n<li>Developing <span>a new regulatory body staffed by experts on algorithms<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Tightening data transparency laws<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=frances+haugen+section+230&amp;oq=frances+haugen+section+230&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57.3541j0j4&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Reforming Section 230<\/a> to make platforms responsible for the content they promote<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Switching social media news feeds <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/facebook-whistleblower-wants-ditch-algorithmic-engagement-ranking-restore-chronological-news-feeds\">to chronological rankings<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Haugen does not, however, want to break Facebook \u2014 sorry, Meta \u2014 up. <span>In her view, that wouldn\u2019t solve the problems caused by the company\u2019s algorithms. Instead, it would simply split the challenges across separate entities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the European Parliament, Haugen expressed further concerns about some of the more stringent rules.<\/p>\n<h2>The EU model<\/h2>\n<p>While MEPs used Haugen\u2019s testimony to promote their own proposals, the data scientist didn\u2019t support all of their ideas.<\/p>\n<p>In certain areas, she advised lawmakers to beef up the DSA. In addition, she said the companies must publically explain how they collect data for uses such as<span> ranking content, advertising, and scoring parameters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She further criticized the DSA\u2019s potential exemption for news media, as it would provide a loophole for disinformation campaigns to exploit.<\/p>\n<p>Haugen also advised lawmakers to impose \u201clanguage-neutral solutions\u201d on platforms, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2021\/11\/08\/frances-haugen-facebook-whistleblower-in-brussels-to-speak-on-impact-of-tech-giants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">EuroNews reports<\/a>. This would ensure that content moderation doesn\u2019t only work on American English.<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"7\">\n<p>If you get the DSA right for your linguistically and ethnically diverse 450 million EU citizens, you can create a game-changer for the world.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Cautious optimism<\/h2>\n<p>However, not all her suggestions involved tightening the rules. Haugen cautioned against an outright ban on targeted advertising, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/11\/08\/facebook-whistleblower-frances-haugen-european-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">TechCrunch reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019d prefer to let the users choose whether they receive ad targeting, although she does want a ban on using third-party data sources, such as credit card companies, for ad targetting.<\/p>\n<p>Some MEPs will be disappointed that she rebuffed this proposal, but her comments will be largely welcomed by EU lawmakers.
