The company pledged to eliminate ad-targeting related to \u2018sensitive\u2019 topics, such as race, <span>health, political belief, or sexual orientation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The new policy will take effect from January 19th and cover all of Meta\u2019s apps.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"13.081967213115\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are removing ad targeting options that relate to topics people may perceive as sensitive. This includes options related to health, race or ethnicity, political affiliation, religion, or sexual orientation. (1\/4) Learn more here: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FDh4iNOm20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/FDh4iNOm20<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Roy Austin, Jr. (@RAustin_Jr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RAustin_Jr\/status\/1458165523880058891?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">November 9, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The changes, of course, have nothing whatsoever to do with the backlash from the <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/facebook\">Facebook<\/a> whistleblower\u2019s revelations, or the growing calls for new social media regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the company said it had followed advice<span> \u201cfrom civil rights experts, policymakers, and other stakeholders on the importance of preventing advertisers from abusing the targeting options we make available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meta called the move \u201ca difficult decision,\u201d which is unsurprising given that advertising revenue makes up the bulk of the company\u2019s income. It also said the <span>move \u201cmay negatively impact some businesses and organizations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Supporters of the shift argue that it will now be harder for advertisers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/facebook-ads-can-still-discriminate-against-women-and-older-workers-despite-a-civil-rights-settlement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">discriminate against specific demographic groups<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techtransparencyproject.org\/articles\/pills-cocktails-and-anorexia-facebook-allows-harmful-ads-target-teens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">exploit vulnerable people<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techtransparencyproject.org\/articles\/how-facebook-profits-insurrection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">foment radicalization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet critics warn the changes will deprive advocacy groups and small businesses of an affordable way to reach their audiences. As Meta VP Graham Mudd acknowledged, they would no longer be able to target ads for causes such as <span>lung cancer awareness or same-sex marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They will, however, still have a vast range of other advertising techniques at their disposal: Meta has no intention of ditching targeted advertising.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe strongly believe that the best advertising experiences are personalized,\u201d said Mudd.<\/p>\n<p>Many critics disagree. Some EU lawmakers are campaigning for <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/10\/21\/inside-a-european-push-to-outlaw-creepy-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">an outright ban<\/a> on targeted advertising.
