Look at Subaru. For months, it\u2019s been counting down the debut of the company\u2019s first all-electric SUV, <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/we-finally-get-a-good-look-at-subarus-first-ev-the-solterra\">the Solterra<\/a>, at next week\u2019s LA Auto show.<\/p>\n<p>Then suddenly, overnight, the company unveiled its battery electric vehicle online in Japan. Highly strategic, if you ask me, with the timing of COP26.<\/p>\n<p>But before we dig into the bigger issues this suggests, let\u2019s take a quick look at what\u2019s on offer.<\/p>\n<h2>Innovation project: the development of the e-Subaru Global Platform together with Toyota Motor Corporation. <span>Let me remind you here, Toyota owns 20% of Subaru.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, the electric SUV shares the platform d technology with Toyota\u2019s first BEVmodel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toyota.com\/electrified\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the bZ4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Two versions of the Solterra are available: \u200b\u200b<span>the front-wheel-drive has a cruising range of 530km, and the 4WD version can drive 460km on a single capability to DC fast-charging up to 150kW \u2014 although the company has not shared how long a full charge will take.<\/p>\n<h2>A solar-paneled roof \u2014 I want to know more<\/h2>\n<p>The presentation alluded to a solar-paneled roof, but details have been scant. Of course, this is no real surprise as its name combines the Latin words for sun and earth. It\u2019s not like the LA Autoshow is small fry.<\/p>\n<p>Further, it\u2019s no coincidence that the Japanese launch coincides with OEMs such as Ford, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, and Volvo committing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/cop26-declaration-zero-emission-cars-and-vans\/cop26-declaration-on-accelerating-the-transition-to-100-zero-emission-cars-and-vans#fn:1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">a declaration of sustainability<\/a> at COP26:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"7\">\n<p>We will work towards all sales of new cars and vans being zero-emission globally by 2040, and by no later than 2035 in the leading market.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Compare this to Japan, a country that has traditionally been recalcitrant in committing to renewable energy. Their local auto industry is now struggling to save face.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota \u2014 the world\u2019s top-selling carmaker \u2014 only released their first all-electric vehicle in 2020. While they\u2019re invested in hydrogen, they have really lagged in keeping pace with renewable innovation. Is the partnership with Suburu as much about redeeming their image as a friendly rivalry?<\/p>\n<p><span>But to make matters worse, they have not signed the COP26 pledge, nor has Suburu or Hyundai-Kia. The Renault-Nissan alliance is also absent from the list. It\u2019s not a good look for Japan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Indeed, f<\/span>or an industry that relies heavily on exports to Europe, Australasia, and the US, it\u2019s odd behavior. Especially, as countries button down on subsidies and incentives for electric vehicle manufacturing and ownership.<\/p>\n<h2>But its not all bad in Japan<\/h2>\n<p>Fortunately, it\u2019s not all bad news for Japan. This is an all-terrain vehicle for off-road driving. So who\u2019s their competition?
