They are available as optional extras for cars such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hyundaiusa.com\/us\/en\/vehicles\/sonata-hybrid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ata-preserver-spaces=\u201dtrue\u201d&gt;Sonata Hybrid<\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: According to Hyundai, the Sonata Hybrid solar panels can generate enough electricity to charge 30 to 60% of a car\u2019s battery with 6 hours of daily charging. This adds around an extra 1,300 km annually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.toyota.com\/prius\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Toyota Prius<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: In Japan, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/toyota-truck-a-machine-of-war-afghanistan-taliban\">Toyota<\/a> Prius Prime is available with a solar roof to add up to 6 km of driving range per day. However, this tech is unavailable in the US as the materials used do not pass US rollover tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nissan Leaf: The company released its first solar roofed car in 2010 \u2014 well ahead of the pack. data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Unfortunately, this has failed to translate to functional startups, as we\u2019ve seen with other The company was founded in 2016 and has raised over $126 million in funding.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The company has over&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/sonomotors.com\/en\/press\/press-releases\/sono-motors-reaches-15000-reservations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">15,000 reservations<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;valued at $385 million. We can expect an IPO very soon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>An old idea with many missed opportunities<\/h2>\n<p>Overall, solar is an area that suffers from a lack of collective investment that we\u2019ve seen in electric batteries and hydrogen more recently. It\u2019s almost like companies started getting excited about solar in the early 2010s \u2014 but then they abruptly pivoted to the far more lucrative electric batteries.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s easy to feel jaded about sun-powered cars. There\u2019s not enough collective interest in bringing the same level of investment \u2014 financially or technically \u2014 as other EV solutions. And I\u2019m not sure we\u2019ll ever see it.
