However, this functionality will be removed from December 13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll try to scrape as much data as possible until then,\u201d the extension\u2019s creator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/programming\/comments\/qu1f2y\/ive_created_a_chrome_extension_and_an_api_for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">said on Reddit<\/a>. \u201cAfter that \u2014 total dislikes will be estimated using extension users as a sample.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The alpha version isn\u2019t perfect. It currently only <span>works on videos for which the Youtube API returns a valid dislike count.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The calculations could also be skewed by the userbase, which is unlikely to represent the average YouTube viewer. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/programming\/comments\/qu1f2y\/ive_created_a_chrome_extension_and_an_api_for\/hkpdmvr\/?context=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">developer said<\/a> they\u2019re exploring ways to mitigate this, such as<span> comparing the downvotes collected through the public of extension users to a cache of real downvotes. The results should also improve as uptake grows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite these shortcomings, I applaud the effort. Hiding dislikes may comfort some creators, but it also quashes dissent and removes a way of spotting scams, crap tutorials, or clickbait.<\/p>\n<p>The plugin could provide a useful service, but its greatest value may be as a potent symbol of protest.<\/p>\n<p>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.returnyoutubedislike.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ty it out here<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 but proceed at your own risk.
