The AGI hype train has hit some heavy traffic.<\/p>\n

While futurists and fundraisers used to make bullish predictions about artificial general intelligence<\/a>, they\u2019ve become quieter lately. Peter Thiel \u2014 the tech billionaire and rumored vampire<\/a> \u2014 says Silicon Valley big brains have lost enthusiasm for AGI.<\/p>\n

\u201cElon\u2019s not talking about it anymore and <\/span>Larry [Page] is off to Fiji and doesn\u2019t seem to be working on it quite as hard,\u201d Thiel said at a recent event<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thiel described Musk as \u201ca weathervane for the zeitgeist,\u201d who\u2019s stopped talking about AGI because interest has declined.<\/p>\n

Scientists are also increasingly skeptical. A recent study paper<\/a> posited that AGI is \u201cin principle impossible,\u201d while other researchers have mocked the term\u2019s proponents.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have yet to come across work on AGI that I can take seriously,\u201d tweeted Abeba Birhane, a cognitive scientist based at University College Dublin.<\/p>\n

The path towards AGI increasingly appears \u2014 at best \u2014 a long one.<\/p>\n

Imbuing machines with human-like intelligence remains immensely challenging. As Melanie Mitchell, a computer science professor at Portland State University noted in a preprint paper published last year on arXiv<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Since its beginning in the 1950s, the field of artificial intelligence has cycled several times between periods of optimistic predictions and massive investment (\u2018AI spring\u2019) and periods of disappointment, loss of confidence, and reduced funding (\u2018AI winter\u2019). Even with today\u2019s seemingly fast pace of AI breakthroughs, the development of long-promised technologies such as self-driving cars, housekeeping robots, and conversational companions has turned out to be much harder than many people expected. One reason for these repeating cycles is our limited understanding of the nature and complexity of intelligence itself.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Critics fear that another AI winter is coming<\/a>. Hyping AGI helped spurred enormous investment in artificial intelligence, but overconfident predictions could be detrimental to progress in the field \u2014 if the real-world advances prove disappointing.<\/p>\n
