Did you say a truck driver? Well, now, once you turn 18, you can become one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But why would you want to?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/3684\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Developing Responsible Individuals for a Vibrant Economy<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (DRIVE-Safe) is changing to allow 18-year-olds to drive trucks across states. While&nbsp; 48 out of 50 US states currently allow 18-year-olds to obtain a Commercial Driving License until federal law is changed, they cannot drive a truck across state lines until they are 21.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As a result, transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg will create an apprenticeship program for young truck drivers by Jan. 14, 2022. The apprentice truckers will be required to drive 240 hours under the supervision of an older driver in a truck equipped with safety features like automatic brake systems and a 65 mile per hour speed governor.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But who wants to be a truck driver, and who wants to be mentored by some grumpy dude? A 2019 survey put \u201cYouTube star\u201d as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/08\/02\/forget-law-school-these-kids-want-to-be-a-youtube-star.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the dream job of kids<\/a>. But I\u2019m also not sure truck drivers are all that keen to act as master apprentices to kids. CDLLife posted a poll on the topic on the&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/app.cdllife.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">CDLLife App<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Out of more than 1,000 responses, 83% of drivers were against lowering the interstate driving age to 18. The idea of mentoring kids with no real financial benefits is also pretty unappealing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But the reality is that trucking is an industry that struggles to attract young talent. According to the&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ifdaonline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;International Foodservice Distributors Association,&nbsp;<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the average age for truck drivers in the US is 46 years old, meaning companies face a retiring workforce.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This is not a problem limited to the US.&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ecta.com\/resources\/Documents\/Other%20publications\/Tackling%20the%20European%20Driver%20Shortage%20-%20IRU%20report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Research<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;in Europe by the IRU finds that the European supply of drivers currently meets an employment demand of 79 percent, leaving a visible driver shortage of 21 percent. Some 40 percent of truck drivers expect to retire by 2027, creating a shortfall of around 185,000 drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brexit: a perfect storm for what happens when there\u2019s a driver shortage&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We only need to look over the pond to the UK to see what happens when there\u2019s a people shortage. After the Brexit vote, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-northamptonshire-57587253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">estimated 20,000 truckers<\/a> went back to Europe and never returned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Industry officials claim the UK is around 100,000 truck drivers short, leading to problems like supermarket stock and fuel shortages.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The U.K. is currently around 100,000 truck drivers short, according to industry officials.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In response, the UK government offered&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/immigrationandmigration.com\/brexit-new-visa-for-truck-drivers-after-chaos-and-shortages-in-the-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">temporary visas<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;to European truck drivers, a deal few took up.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Why would you want to work up until Christmas for a country that told you to go home? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Worse, in a poorly paid role, where you spend most of your life on the road. You have limited social connections and even more limited access to bathrooms on the job. Just so other people can buy their Christmas presents or add fuel to their car.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The government ended up&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/04\/britain-deploys-army-to-deliver-fuel-amid-panic-buying-and-shortages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">getting the army in<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;to drive fuel tankers. That\u2019s one use for people\u2019s tax dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Driver shortages are indicative of bigger industry problems<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But back to North America, where some are questioning the hand wringing about a driver shortage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Industry publication <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/is-there-really-a-driver-shortage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Freight Waves<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;believes that truck driver numbers are up from pre-COVID days. They assert that the news around truck driver shortages distracts from the bigger issue of worker conditions and worker retention, noting that drivers are concerned about parking and pay, an issue ignored by larger carriers who only talk about the driver shortage.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ooida.com\/2021\/supply-chain-dysfunction-is-nothing-new-for-truckers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;takes an equally nuanced stance, saying truck drivers are :<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13.604938271605\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u2026 often restricted by factors beyond their control, such as excessive detention time and the lack of readily-available, safe parking for their trucks. If you want to get kids involved in heavy freight, look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.einride.tech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Einride<\/a>, who have created electric truck pods without a driver\u2019s cab that drivers remotely control. That\u2019s a good use for the stellar hand-eye coordination of a long Twitch stream.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I believe we will see driverless trucks will be routinely transporting freight on public roads. It\u2019s already happening at a lesser rate on worksites with all truck manufacturers engaged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In terms of autonomous truck startups, key players include&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/embarktrucks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Embark<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/plus.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Plus.ai,<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tusimple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">TuSimple,<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and Waymo. <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/gatik.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Gatik<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;recently gained attention this month as the first use worldwide of an autonomous middle-mile truck running without a safety driver in the driver\u2019s seat.
