If it was a lesser brand, I\u2019d think it was a ploy for publicity, but <span>the latest app bug was way too severe for that.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last Friday, the BBC <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-59357306\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span>that about 500 users reported an error on the Tesla app at around 4:40 ET (10:40 CET) that left car owners unable to unlock the doors or start their cars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since the company has no PR team (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prdaily.com\/what-teslas-move-to-eliminate-its-pr-department-means-for-the-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Elon sacked them<\/a>), it was Elon Musk to the rescue. So he went on Twitter to keep stranded drivers updated. I\u2019m glad he was able to take a break from tweeting about the acronym for his <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1453954994546229253?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Texas Institute of Technology &amp; Science<\/a> to help those poor souls.<\/p>\n<p><span>So when a car journo sent out a message to the Twitterverse, Elon Musk was ready to listen:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"8.391959798995\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I\u2019m experiencing 500 server error to connect my <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tesla?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">@tesla<\/a> Model 3 on my iOS app in Seoul, S.Korea. And this is where the best plans fail, when the unexpected happens.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The failure of the app exposes bigger problem with IoT connected devices<\/h2>\n<p><span>Rest assured, the Tesla problem is resolved. Take one brand: the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petnet.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>Petnet<\/span><\/a><span> automated pet feeders should feed your cat using preset timers controlled by an app. Great idea\u2026 until they experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/2016\/08\/01\/petnet-shows-happens-iot-fails-dl1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">a big&nbsp;<\/a>system failure&nbsp;in 2016, then&nbsp;<i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">again<\/i>&nbsp;<a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-51628795\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-51628795\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">in 2020<\/a>. For most loving pet owners, that\u2019s just too big a risk to take.<\/span><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Tesla\u2019s got bigger things to deal with<\/h2>\n<p><span>So, yeah, the Tesla app debacle is small fry, really. It\u2019s not like <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/a-tesla-highway-breakdown-and-electric-vehicle-safety\">a Tesla bricking it on a highway<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019d add that any good <\/span><span>smart lock design includes backup strategies and fail-safes. An example might be allowing a user to store two versions of firmware on the same device, so if one does not operate correctly, they can revert to the other \u2014 <span>just like how escalators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7fS7mCse6Es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">still provide their basic function while broken<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At least Tesla owners could operate their cars by other means \u2014 they just didn\u2019t have them handy at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> But we\u2019re entrusting Tesla tech with an awful lot of tech that if it fails, has the ability to end lives.
