But a year later, local taxi company <a href=\"https:\/\/taxisverts.be\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Taxis Vert<\/a> filed a lawsuit against it and the court ruled that such a service didn\u2019t comply with regulations.<\/p>\n<p><span>Uber reformed its services in Brussels following the suit and has since only worked with drivers who have an VVB professional license \u2014 the same license held by limousine drivers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>But that doesn\u2019t seem to have appeased courts, as they\u2019ve now ruled that the 2015 cease-and-desist order&nbsp;<\/span><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">also<\/i><span>&nbsp;applies to the VVB drivers who work for Uber.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What does this mean for Uber drivers in Brussels?<\/h3>\n<p>According to an official statement by the company, almost 2,000 drivers will loose \u201ctheir opportunity to generate income.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cDe facto this concerns 95 percent of our drivers,\u201d told an Uber spokesperson to De Standaard.<\/p>\n<p><span>Following the news, many Uber drivers have taken to the streets in Brussels to protest the new ruling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMore than 2,000 drivers have to support their families, pay their rent and the credit for their car, just like all other drivers.&nbsp;<\/span><span>But apparently we are illegal,\u201d said a driver to local news outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bruzz.be\/videoreeks\/donderdag-25-november-2021\/video-uber-chauffeurs-willen-brussel-blokkeren-tot-taxiplan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Bruzz<\/a>. <\/span><span>\u201cTechnology is advancing, but we just keep going backwards.&nbsp;<\/span><span>That is not normal.&nbsp;<\/span><span>I have no words for it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"6.4766839378238\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Do not <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/drive?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#drive<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Brussels?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#Brussels<\/a> today, cause <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/uber?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#uber<\/a> drivers are blocking all main roads. He made his stance crystal clear in a statement, calling out Brussels\u2019 backwardness:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p class=\"p1\">This ruling is based on outdated regulations that predate the arrival of smartphones and which the government has promised to reform for seven years. We are very concerned because 2,000 Brussels VVB drivers will lose the opportunity to generate income from Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We urge the Brussels government to reform the sector quickly so that drivers can continue to work and provide livelihoods for their families.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>What does this mean for Uber\u2019s future in Europe?<\/h3>\n<p><span>This latest clash in Brussels is just the latest one in a long line of incidents. The company has fought a series of legal battles across Europe over how it employs its drivers, how it fits within regulations, and whether it unfairly competes with local taxi associations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s name a few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>In September, the Amsterdam civil court <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-europe-business-netherlands-amsterdam-8ec6f70b91152243f2594fbab1c9f28a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ruled<\/a> that Uber drivers fall under the Dutch taxi drivers\u2019 collective labor agreement \u2014 meaning they are entitled to the same employment benefits as taxi drivers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Uber was forced to adjust its practices in&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sueddeutsche.de\/wirtschaft\/verkehr-uber-schafft-fuer-deutsche-kunden-mehr-transparenz-dpa.urn-newsml-dpa-com-20090101-191223-99-247001\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sueddeutsche.de\/wirtschaft\/verkehr-uber-schafft-fuer-deutsche-kunden-mehr-transparenz-dpa.urn-newsml-dpa-com-20090101-191223-99-247001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.sueddeutsche.de\/wirtschaft\/verkehr-uber-schafft-fuer-deutsche-kunden-mehr-transparenz-dpa.urn-newsml-dpa-com-20090101-191223-99-247001\" aria-label=\"Germany\">Germany<\/a><span>&nbsp;in 2019 in order to comply with national regulations and avoid a country-wide ban.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>In 2017, the company was forced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-italy-uber-idUSKBN18M22E?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=technologyNews&amp;utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+reuters%2FtechnologyNews+%28Reuters+Technology+News%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">briefly halt its services in Italy<\/a> after a legal battle with the country\u2019s taxi associations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>To put it simply, Uber\u2019s growth in the European cities hasn\u2019t been as easy as the company probably wished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The EU isn\u2019t really in favor of the gig economy model Uber represents, and besides that, Uber must take into account that operating in gray regulatory areas won\u2019t actually bring profit in the long term.<\/p>\n<p><span>Although it\u2019s also fair for the company\u2019s representatives to point out that legislative frameworks need to consider and adapt to current technological capabilities.
