No, it\u2019s an autocycle!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You might have seen a weird vehicle at any number of recent car show that sits somewhere between motorcycles and cars. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s called an autocycle, and while the idea is hardly new, it kind of reached its peak about 2014, only to leave most hopeful buyers cooling their heels waiting for vehicles to roll off the factory floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> But what is an autocycle? Where does it sit in the mobility ecosystem? More importantly, can it emerge as the future of micromobility?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What is an autocycle?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"post-image data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Legally, an autocycle is a three-wheeled, typically enclosed vehicle, that, as the name suggests, is essentially part motorcycle and part car.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Let\u2019s compare it to a three-wheel motorbike:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/transportation\/transportation-review-autocycles.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">National Conference of State Legislatures<\/a>(NCSL) there are several key three-wheel motorcycle characteristics<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It has handlebars&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You can straddle or sit astride<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Need to be registered as a motorbike<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The driver must wear a helmet&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">By comparison, autocycles are defined by a number of key characteristics:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Usually has a steering wheel&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Usually, the driver sits in a seat&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Vehicle may include side passenger or back seat<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">May need a driver\u2019s license AND motorcycle license<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The driver may have to wear a helmet (varies per US state)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In Europe, autocycles fall under&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/2013\/168\/2020-11-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Category L<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, including vehicles like powered cycles, two- and three-wheel mopeds, two- and three-wheel motorcycles, and motorcycles with side-cars.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the US, things get more complicated, with requirements and regulations varying state by state. The three wheels reduce the number of friction points coming in contact with the road, which increases energy efficiency.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A lower center of gravity and forward-weighted body increases stability compared to two-wheel vehicles.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The opportunity to be an early adopter in a new mode of transport.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fun and novelty factor! People will notice you in one of these.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What are the disadvantages of an autocycle?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lower safety standards than cars can mean no airbags, roll cages, or even safety belts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While you can place orders with several manufacturers, there are few models on the road today.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While the vehicles are smaller than typical autos, you can only use them on the road, so they don\u2019t reduce traffic.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Low passenger capabilities mean more vehicles on the road.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Their use is limited mainly to urban areas.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Their low market traction may make it hard to find an appropriate vehicle insurer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What can I buy?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There are not all that many autocycles that you can buy. The company raised a staggering $16 million in <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.startengine.com\/elio-motors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">crowdfunding<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in 2015, promising vehicles for a mere $6,800. Then, it was years of radio silence, with plenty of people wondering <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/in-depth\/money\/cars\/2021\/10\/21\/elio-motors-took-millions-customer-deposits-never-delivered-car\/5930672001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">if they were scammed<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;and would ever see a vehicle in their garage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If I ordered a car in 2013 only to have production pushed back again and again with very little communication, I\u2019d be worried.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Well, after years of radio silence, in September, the brand&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/elio-motors-announces-its-intent-to-produce-an-electric-version-of-its-popular-vehicle-301371916.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">announced a pivot<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;to an electric version of their three-wheeled vehicle.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Elio-E is priced at $14,900, considerably higher than the original cost. It\u2019s made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polaris.com\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Polaris<\/a>, a brand known for its on and off-road vehicles, snowmobiles, military offerings, and a range of other ways to get you moving on offer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The company has been around since 1954, so at least you can be guaranteed of its ability to bring vehicles to market,&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Slingshot retails somewhere between $20,000 and $30,000 depending on your design specifications. Somewhat ominous, the company notes in tiny letters on its website:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It does not have airbags, and it does not meet automotive safety standards. Don\u2019t drink and drive.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There are three versions on offer ranging from $20k to $30k, and unlike its contemporaries, they run on an ICE. There\u2019s no cover from the elements, but Slingshot models also come with Ride Command, a 7-inch display that controls Bluetooth and USB audio, navigation, and vehicle <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The company has a lot to say about safety, noting its use of passenger car standards as reference for due care, especially regarding the physical design, seatbelt functionality, and a crash-sensor that supports immediate automatic battery disconnect high-voltage traction power.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The FUV also sports a kinetic energy recovery system (\u201cregenerative braking\u201d) to slow the vehicle\u2019s motion at speed while capturing energy back into the battery and features full windshield wiping and washing systems for visibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Unsurprisingly, the makers don\u2019t recommend its Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Can autocycles succeed when microcars failed to scale?<\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There\u2019s been plenty of efforts to make small, functional city vehicles like&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/microcars-future-of-shared-mobility-syndication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">microcars<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. It offers an \u201curban-cycle range\u201d of 100km thanks to a 6kWh lithium-ion battery and energy recovery under deceleration.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It comes in two versions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Twizy 45 has its top speed capped at 45 kmph and drivers only need to be 16 to drive one in France.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Twizy 80 has a top speed of 80kmph and requires users to have a valid <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/routetogermany.com\/drivingingermany\/driving-license-classes#car\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">B driving license<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Small vehicles (both microcars and autocycles) make sense in cities \u2014 they\u2019re energy-efficient, easy to handle, and easy to park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But the bigger challenge is helping attract owners.
