The campaigners are urging Microsoft shareholders to vote for two proposals at a November 30 meeting:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li id=\"yui_3_17_2_1_1637929196347_341\">Ask Microsoft to <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/57693891579fb3ab7149f04b\/t\/60c9f4ee85b51535441f3d7b\/1623848174487\/Microsoft+2021+Lobbying+Alignment+-++FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>ensure its lobbyists live up to its values and policies<\/span><\/a> on racial justice, human rights, and privacy.<\/li>\n<li>Call for Microsoft to <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/57693891579fb3ab7149f04b\/t\/60c9f5ccda927a019996e16a\/1623848400842\/Prohibit+Sales+of+Facial+Recognition+Technology+to+Government+Entities.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span>stop all sales of facial recognition<\/span><\/a> to government entities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The sisters may not look like your stereotypical digital activists, but they\u2019re more tech-savvy than you might expect.<\/p>\n<h2>Who are the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace?<\/h2>\n<p><span>The Roman Catholic order was founded in 1884 in Nottingham, England by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.csjp.org\/roots\/historyfounder.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Margaret Anna Cusack<\/a><span>, and has a history of promoting social justice as a way to peace. <\/span><span>The congregation currently serves in the US, UK, and Haiti.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The sisters are also seasoned shareholder advocates. Despite its <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/racialjustice?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#racialjustice<\/a> policies, Microsoft lobbies for bills enabling police surveillance. In 2018, she was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/06\/nyregion\/dear-potus-the-nun-who-tweets-a-daily-prayer-to-president-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">interviewed by The New York Times<\/a> after tweeting daily prayers to Donald Trump for more than 650 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The beef with Microsoft<\/h2>\n<p>As racial justice protests swept across the US last year, Microsoft pledged <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/microsofts-pause-on-facial-recognition-sales-could-speed-up-federal-rules\">to restricting sales of facial recognition tech to police<\/a>. However, the firm made no mention of other contentious government clients, such as ICE and authoritarian regimes.<\/p>\n<p>The company is also is also attempting to shape the regulation that governs it. Microsoft&nbsp;lobbied hard for <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/washington-state-passes-microsoft-approved-facial-recognition-laws\">facial recognition laws that were adopted in Washington last year<\/a>, which is unsurprising, given the bill was sponsored by one of its own employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite what it says publicly, Microsoft is spending its $9.5 million annual lobbying budget on fighting a bill that would ban discriminatory facial recognition,\u201d said Sister Susan. \u201cIn fact, it lobbies states to pass laws that would increase police use of dangerous surveillance tech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace had previously asked Microsoft for a report on how its lobbying aligns with its stated principles, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/558890-exclusive-scrutiny-mounts-on-microsofts-surveillance-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the Hill reported in June<\/a>. They have now called on the company\u2019s shareholders to hold the firm accountable.<\/p>\n<p>Good luck, sisters.
